Hi, I'm new here and I should probably start off by saying I don't know very much about computers. So if I've made some idiotic mistake in my parts list, I'm sorry.

I need to get the perfect build planned out for a PC that is optimized to render quickly, and can also allow me to game. I want to avoid ridiculously slow renders, I don't have a "farm" or anything fancy but I will be working on this PC daily.

  • Primarily I need to use it for 3D design, animation, digital art, video editing and gaming.
Programs I would be using would be things like maya, blender, zbrush, mudbox, and possibly octane. (Photoshop, sketchbook, and ect. for digital art)
I'm not sure if it matters, but games wise- WOW and OverWatch to start.

For gaming I'd need high/Decent res. Doesn't have to be 4k or anything though.

  • My budget is $2500-$3000 Canadian (No more than $3k taxes in would be ideal, but going slightly over if the part(s) makes a monumental difference is not out of consideration)
This is my list so far.

I'm mainly confused about the video cards. Some say do two cards, like 980s- some say otherwise. I've heard plenty of good about the quadro's performance though. Input about this would be greatly appreciated.

One other thing, the memory- any reason specifically in this case as to why 2x16 might be better than the 4x8?

If you're wondering why there's no OS listed, it's because I can get Windows 10 or 8 free from a buddy. I may also be able to get the barracuda hard drive as well- so I may have $100 more wiggle room if that helps stretch the budget a bit.

Thanks in advance !!!

Hi, thank you for response ! I'm glad the ram is alright, that's good to know.

There's a noticeable disparity in prices between the US and Canada, I'll check later but I have a feeling your build might be a bit over-budget over here. For example, the xeon cpu in your list is about $800 here. I checked out the case, seems nice aside from the silver badge on the front !

If I go with a 256 950 instead of the 850 EVO, could I get away with a 2TB hard drive ? Or should I go with 4 to compensate ? If so, any difference between seagate barracuda and constellation models ?

As for GPU, I've had a many people recommend the GTX 1080 as it apparently outperforms the quadro I had originally selected.

This is my current buildlist ... though I...
I'd go a single 1080, not all programs will support SLI (two cards), 4x8GB would allow full use of quad channel mode which will help in many of your programs, also keep in mind 3200 will require an OC of the CPU, with the selected CPU I'd prob go 2800 tops

Hi, thanks for your reply ! I actually have a new & slightly improved build list here. With a 1080 in it, though I'm not sure which 1080 model is the best for my needs. The "gaming" one is included in the new build.

I guess I was curious about dual or multi cards because I'm keen on using Octane.

The new build also uses a different processor, quad core & a bit faster. With the new one, should I still change the memory? I was also wondering if I should/can up the SSD ? As I am going to be putting quite a bit of software on this PC.

Helferi,

A good list.

1. GPU: Consider buying a used Quadro M4000 in place of the K4000. these appear to cos about $900 CAD. This will preserve the viewport support, and high anti-aliasing of a Quadro, but will be far better in 3D modeling and games. The Passmark average 3D rating of the K4000 is 2824, and Quadro M4000 = 6518. For comparison, the average 3D for a GTX 770 is 6137. The K4000 is running nearer the GTX 650 Ti at 2667. I've had 8 or so used Quadros and never had a failure in 11 years. I still use a 2004 FX1800 that cost $25 in the server and an 2008 FX 4800 in a Dell Precision T5400.

2. Drives: X99 and M.2 are made for each and perhaps consider would suggest changing the main drive to Samsung 950 256GB NVMe. Pasmark disk ratings: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB = 4248 ($198) and Samsung 950 256GB NVMe = 11799 ($235). Yes, smaller capacity, but I've found -on an HP z620 with 256GB Z Turbo Drive (Samsung SM951 within) that the OS /programs is about 140GB, leaving 100GB for files works very well. My complete files minus media files over 15 years equals only about 75GB and with the amount of archived stuff, the files on the main drive equal about 40GB. There are of course other M.2 in the 480-512GB category

3. RAM: It is better to have each channel complete so use RAM in sets of 4. For the MSI board with 8 slots, buy 4X 8GB and that will allow another 32GB later. Actually, with animation, I'd say go ahead and have the 8X 8GB from the start.

4. Case: Consider a larger, more airy case, that is rated to be quiet. In long rendering slogs, the fans will be running on high and noise in workstations quiet is essential.

Your listed system shoulld work well. For an alternative, follows is a list made earlier for this same use. Very good performance but in $CAD terms over the mark- I'd say in the CAD $3500 range. The E5-1650 v4 is chosen as it is 3.6 /4.0GHz. The 4GHZ top speed makes the important single thread mark at 2197 and average CPU score 14334 as compared to the i7-5820K at 2009 /12980. another important aspect is that the i7-5820K supports only 28 PCIe lanes to the Xeon E5;s 40. GPU's use x16 and M.2 use4 so if you ever added a second GPU the system would running low.. A second GPU or would run at x8- not terrible, but not a good idea for a GPU coprocessor. Also, with animation rendering, ECC is apparently important- to avoid crashes that seems to happen typically at 80-90% completion.
