This will be my first build and I have already done a fair amount of research. My budget is around $800-$1,000 USD and I will use this computer for gaming (WOW, modded Skyrim), school work and other light use.

I pretty much knew from the start that I wanted an i5 6500 and gtx 1060 6gb, as I felt that was a good starting point with decent performance.

My targeted resolution is 1920x1080p, so my monitor fits that criteria. Also, I decided that for now a 250gb SSD will fulfill my storage needs for my OS, games and other files ( I will not have mountains of music, tv shows, movies, etc. on my pc).

I would say the most difficult part to narrow down was the mobo, I picked this one as it received generally good reviews, fills my needs for now, while allowing for some more wiggle room in the future.

I still plan on purchasing a keyboard, headphones, and probably an optical drive as well.

I don't have any interest in Overclocking now. The price of the PSU is reflective of a discount from jet.com and I plan on getting a discount for the GPU from there as well. Again, I would love to hear any ideas, suggetions, etc. Thank you!

Solution
Everything you listed is more than okay however I'd try and get some 3200mhz RAM, it will make quite a difference. I regret not getting faster RAM for my own setup now.

I don't have an HDD. My plan was just to use the SSD for now and get an HDD later if needed. I won't initially have a whole lot on the computer, as I have a laptop that I'll do most of my work on. But, if you think I need one I had initially included a Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD along with the SSD that i can add back on.

H170 boards only support 2133MHz RAM as does the CPU
higher frequency RAM is only effective with low timings
all in all that would add around 50-80$ to this setup for little gains
