Hello!

I was looking for some help building my first ever PC build! I'm not entirely new to the concept, because i've already installed a EVGA Geforce GTX 660 into my old setup, but my old setup recently decided to crap out, so i'm looking for a way to maybe recycle the old parts of it, and integrate them into the new setup that I am planning to build around summertime.

(Also some insight into what I can keep would be greatly appreciated, considering it was randomly crashing. I don't want to cut corners with this new PC, and I don't want to put a faulty part into the new computer)

The old setup's specs were as follows:

OS – Windows 10 (Update from Windows 7, not worth it.)
Motherboard – MSI MS-7522, X58 pro-usb3
CPU – Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20 GHz (8 CPUs), ~ 3.2GHz
Graphics Card – Nvidia Geforce GTX 660 (1600x900, DVI)
RAM - 6 GB 3x2GB
Power Supply – 700 Watt Power Supply
Hard Drive – 960 GB Hitachi ATA Device

The thing I was looking to keep, would be the Hard Drive for my music files, but I do not know how to clean wipe it if you will, but there is a computer technician near my dormitory. The second thing i'm looking to keep would be the power supply. I'm going to find a place to sell everything else for money to contribute to the new build. Like I said, I don't want to cut any corners with this PC.

Now for the specs of the new PC, this is where I need help.

Father Gaming PC Setup
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 OEM (64-bit)
Case: NZXT S340 Black/Blue) ATX Mid Tower Case
Processor: _______
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken x61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ______
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
SSD (For OS): Crucial MX200 500GB 2.5"
HDD: Seagate SuperSpeed HDD 1TB 2.5" 5400 RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive
HDD 2: (960 GB Hitachi ATA Device from old PC)
Power Supply: (700 Watt from old PC)

I need help picking out a motherboard and processor that would be in line with this setup. I could go through the PCPartPicker.com, but I want to get some input before I just click buttons on things I honestly don't know that much about, and that i'm interested in (motherboard and processor compatibility with otherparts in the PC)! The things i'm looking for in the motherboard are:

SLI Compatibility for the future
64 GB Max Capacity for Ram

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!!!!

What is the make/model on the power supply? I am not aware of any quality units, that are 700w rated. PSU quality should never be skimped on. I would not be surprised if that is the problem with you old system. Tier 1 and 2 units only. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

Processor, I would go with a 6700k. Motherboard, you would want a Z170 board that is SLI compatible. I would look at ones that satisfy budget, and color scheme, then find reviews for them.

The power supply in the old build is a XION -700P12N. I just looked it up, and I'm thinking I need to replace it in the new build. Any suggestions? Thanks for a fast reply!

I'm looking to have just one graphics card, the EVGA GEFORCE GTX 970 4 GB SC Gaming ACX 2.0.

Ok cool, thank you for all of your help! Could you maybe direct me in the direction of a certain Z170 board? Or is it just a pick and choose scenario now, keeping in mind the peripherals you suggested above?

Again, thank you so much!

For a bit more of a budget oriented board, I was looking at the MSI Z170 SLI Plus, for my own upgrade, before I had to cancel those plans, for something else that needed replacing. The Z170 Gaming M5, is another board that may work for you. Depends on pricing, and features you want.

I'm going to go with the M5. Thank you very much for all of your help, it is very useful! I will post a picture of it, and add it to my profile later on!

Again, thank you very much for the help with my first build.
