Hello all,

I am new here and this is my very first thread on this forum. I would like to know your opinion on my choice for building a budget gaming pc.
Here is my build which I am going to try.
  1. Mobo - MSI 450 Tomahawk
  2. Processor - Ryzen 5 2600x
  3. RAM - corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 16gb (8x2)
  4. GPU - GTX 1660ti 6gb
  5. STORAGE - Kingston 240 GB SSD + WD 1TB HDD
  6. PSU - corsair VS 550W
  7. Cabinet - Corsair Carbide 100R/Spec 05.

I am not a pro gamer and not very much good at choosing pc components. After a lot of online research and comparison I came up with this assemble build.
Please Help me in reviewing this build combination and provide your suggestions if there are any over selection or mismatched components if you think of any.
And by the way for display, I currently have a 18.5 inch LED HD monitor and planning to upgrade to 4k FHD/UHD with minimal screen size of 27 inch.
Thanks in advance

The PSU isn't good for a gaming build, needs to be changed to a better quality unit such as the Seasonic Focus Gold 550W. The memory will work well if the speeds are 3000 or 3200 as AMD Ryzen performs noticeably better with it (difference between 2133 & 3200 can be above 20 FPS). Everything else looks good, if your looking at 4K then you may need to consider a better GPU or have to lower the settings quite drastically to get playable FPS. If it were me I'd try to get the 2060 and pair it with a 1440P/60 or 75hz/IPS or VA/Freesync monitor and that would give you a well balanced gaming system. If your tight on money then get the 1600 instead as it can be overclocked pretty close to 2600X performance.

hello Irfan, what is your budget and where will you be buying parts? for the most part looks like a good system, with a couple issues that need addressing.
first and this is a personal thing, the 240 is the smallest SSD you should be looking at (I would opt for a larger SSD and lose the HDD, use the funds for a bigger SSD). second the PSU is all wrong for that build. the VS is the worst unit corsair currently sells. my joke about the VS is that its the PSU you send to your enemies, its not what you want in your system.

the GPU is good for 1080 @ 144hz, IDK how well it will run a 4k display, eyes open you may need to replace the GPU with the monitor if you go to 4k.

So first thing I should say is wait at least till tomorrow when AMD announces their new Ryzen 3000 and NAVI graphics card stuff. It may be worth it then to wait to build for that hardware, or at the very least put some of the current stuff on sale.

Now here are a couple changes to your current build:

RAM make sure its 3000mhz or faster with 3200MHZ and up being the best
SSD: 240 is very small, you can pick up Crucial MX500 500GB ones very cheap these days so It may be worth investing in.
PSU: the Corsair VS series is junk, the CXM is a step up but I would buy something like a Seaosnic FOCUS Gold 550 or EVGA G3 which both are on sale quite frequently

GPU: the 1660ti is great but at 4k is beyond its capabilities for steady game-play, I would get a 1440P panel

Hi, Thanks for the comment and suggestion. The suggested PSU looks quite expensive than what i have chosen. Is it worth spending that much of money for a expensive PSU? I know PSU is very important part of the build but just getting to know better. And yes i can consider 2060 than 1660 ti pairing with 1440P monitors. For the CPU i chose 26000x because it gives me base clock of 3.2GHz and 4.2GHz if overclocked which i think is comparitively quite good with other ryzen 5 series CPUs. I am pretty much impressed with your build. Its nice, would you mind telling me what will be the cost of your build?

Hi, Thanks for sharing your words. My budget is in between 75k INR to 1Lac which is 1000$-1500$ roughly. And i would be preferring to buy parts in my city offline markets in Bangalore, KA, India. I would get all of the genuine components for better price than amazon's online price. I will consider your suggestion for SSD upgrade rather than coosing HDD.

Hi, Thanks for the comment and suggestions. Ofcourse i am considering the new 300 series too if its worth waiting and better than the current gen CPUs. The configuration i have estimated above is my preference and might change after all of yours' suggestions.

Heard that the realtek audio chip on the tomahawk isn't the greatest can have problems, but it has good vrms

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/msi-b450-tomahawk-distorted-sound.3480620/#post-21037062

I think that means there's a small chance you could wind up with a board that has a bad sound chip. That could also be because, if the user doesn't switch on loudness equalization in realtek hd audio manager, the default sound volume is a bit low without it. Also increase the treble usually sorts it on my integrated realtek sound chip,(on a different board). But I don't think the sound is amazing, and the effects are ghastly, just adds a bit of reverb and echo, bit on the naff side.

The overclockers review says 2 high side mosfets per inductor on the vrm means it has twice as many than some other b450 boards and so runs the vrms 40c cooler, which is nice and stable for the cpu.

If the realtek audio were a standalone card it would be a budget card, but it is integrated into many mobo's so they have a working sound system, but audio is one of the things that suffers from corner cutting really, there's two sides of the fence there, one side being well you got to get the stuff out at an affordable price, and the other side, you can easily disable it, if sound is your thing, and install for example, a Asus Xonar DX or Creative Soundblaster Z anyway that's all another area of reviews to dive into. Seems like the Xonar is quite competitive to the Soundblaster.

Also the Spec 05 Chassis only has 150mm clearance for a cooler so it doesn't fit the very largest such as the noctua nh-d15 but you shouldn't need one that large for a ryzen, not that it isn't nice to have but practically any air cooler is ok for it.

Now this is something that I am expecting. Both seems budget beast. The prior looks pretty good and match to my expectations if I drop idea of 4k and go for some decent 1440p and save some extra bucks. And for the later build, is 2600 a good choice to pair up with RTX 2070.

Yes. 1080p and 4k are the same thing, 4k is just 4x 1080p, so to a cpu it'll do the same, it's on the gpu to pick up the slack. 1440p is lightly different, it's a HD (720p) derivative (often called 2k for that reason) not a Full HD (1080p) derivitive.
2070 is minimum for 4k, a 2080 would be better. A 2070 would be great for 1440p, but that's where cpus have issues, trying to get the popular 144Hz. So that 2600 would definitely benefit from 3200MHz ram and some OC, as that'll add 30-50fps easily over stock values and slow ram.

The Corsair VS is the lowest level model of 230v psu Corsair puts its name on. It's Corsair, so ppl have heard of it (its a name brand right!) and Corsair sells those psus very cheap as a result, and they sell by the boatload when you figure the alternative is a Zippy or thermaltake or cheap offbrand Gold (named, not rated) 700w rbg with 1x 6pin pcie plug. But being popular doesn't make it good, and you are about to drop INR100k on a pc. Spend the extra few INR for a psu that's worth putting in your pc, that has all the protective circuitry, 10 year warranty etc. It's very cheap insurance against meltdowns or fried motherboards.

Thank You. That's really a good explaination for resolutions. Would you mind me asking to suggest a good budget monitor for the configurations above? for 2600 compared with RTX 2070 and a good one for 2600x paired with GTX 1660. That would help me to choose the build easily. My Max budget would be 25K INR for a monitor. I know 4K monitors are expensive but i am limited with the budget and i am not planning to spend more for the monitor.

What type of gaming or work do you do? Or want? 4k is great for immersive, open world type games like Witcher 3 or fallout or skyrim etc, whereas a 1440p/144Hz monitor is far better suited for fast paced stuff like fortnite or Cod or Battlefield, even old cs:go. Granted the open world games look good too at 1440p, so if you play a mix then that's the direction I'd go, and not bother with 4k.

Obviously that's out of budget, but it's the cheapest listed. But thats what you'd be looking for. A 1440p, 120Hz or better, preferably VA or IPS, with Freesync or G-Sync and DisplayPort. I'm quite sure you could do better for prices, but Acer makes a great monitor.

Zen 2 compatibility for msi boards

just thought of a couple of other things that might be relevant, right now the big question is will existing am4 boards support upcoming Zen 2 cpu's, in case you want to upgrade. Zen 2 is to be released Jul 7 in case you weren't aware. This may have a knock on effect on prices, and 6 weeks isn't all that long to wait to save a few $. I'd expect the Zen 2 release to be a frenzied black friday for the cpu market tbh.

Some entry level boards may not benefit from upcoming patches to support zen 2 and pci-e 4 on the first pci-e slot. You'll have to look up every board you're considering for zen 2 compatibility.

Also avoid gigabyte x470 gaming ultra in case you're thinking of going in a different direction for the board, it has known issues with vDroop and poor quality vrms. Be wary of vendors trying to offload b-grade stock. Also, have a rummage through amazon warehouse/any decent mainstream vendor bargain bin, sometimes if you're lucky a good repack will save you $$$. Way back when I got my sabertooth for £99 repacked when it was retailing at £145, and some corsair vengeance pro ddr3 2400 for a song, so cheap that even now, second hand versions are selling at a price that would bizarrely make me a profit on the now totally obsolete fx platform. It shouldn't be possible, no idea what's going on.

Psu tier list might be handy, don't cheap out on that, A (mid range) should be sufficient avoid the problems of low quality psu's.

And PC partpicker has got endless options to mull over and don't rush it, you've got weeks 'til Zen 2 release to think about it!

I will use the build more for gaming like GTAV, BattleField, PUBG, AssasinsCreed, Witcher 3 and possible games with more good graphics and also for my job related stuff like programming and projects. Anyway the Acer choice is really cool but, for now i am tight on monitor budget so i m plannning to drop the idea of buying 2k or 4k monitor for now and better by good monitor in price range of 50k in upcoming months. Thanks for the suggetsion.

Yes. I am expecting build my PC around end of july or august 1st week. So yes i may benifit with some dollars and i may also consider if Zen 2 CPUs become match for my budget and requirement. I will be looking out for the configurations for the next couple of months.

Honestly, for as much as a 1440p costs, you'll have to decide if it's really worth the expense. I've been running dual 1080p monitors for years, I'll never go back to a single monitor setup unless I get a super-ultrawide like the 49" Samsung, which is really 2x monitors in one, but without the edges in the middle. I originally went dual because of my wife's work, she generally has 3-4 tabs open and viewable at any given time, just doing comparisons and copy/paste, which is really easy when you just block a section and move it to the other screen. It'd be a serious bonus to your programming and projects as you'll see real time changes without the constant tab flipping.

For a couple of cheaper 1080p/144Hz monitors, @ 24", you'd only need a gtx1660ti, which pairs up very well with a 2600x or even upto a i7-9700k, which is about as good as it gets for a cpu that's not the monster i9-9900k.

So there's multiple options and directions you can go with this, depending on what your emphasis is, work or play.
