PC Building vs Upgrading

I am planning on getting a better pc for gaming. I always see craigslist posts of i7 builds going for around $500, and I was wondering whether I should build from scratch or upgrade a used pc from craigslist or eBay. My budget is $600, and I'm more focused on gpu because of gaming needs. So I was going to build around an i3 or i5, but I would like a more experienced opinion.

Builds found on craigslist can be really good for the price, but you don't have any warranty about how much the PC has been pushed. If you find a really good deal, I think it could be worth getting and then upgrading to better components over time. Since you budget is fairly small for a gaming build, it may be the best option for you. Once you find the build you think you want on Craigslist, don't hesitate to make a new thread and ask what others think of the build/price.

if going that direction i would try to get a complete list of parts including manufacturer and model types for all components before purchase:
power supply
motherboard
disk drive(s)
CPU
RAM
case
fans
anything and everything
