I'm looking at adding more fans to my case but my motherboard only supports 3.

I've got space for 4 more fans so what would be best?
Getting a splitter that plugs into the PSU or not?

Thank you.

Hi -
I have several fans running directly from my PSU with no problem. You'll just want to be sure that you have enough "juice" in your PSU and you're spreading the electrical load.

Just to be sure we're solving the right problem - do you have evidence that heat is a problem in your case?

Hope this helps!

Connected directly to your PSU those fans will run at full speed all the time which makes them unnecessarily noisy.

You can use a splitter to connect 2 fans to one header

However 4 fans are rarely needed for a modern system
2-3 is usually totally sufficient, the amount of air needed often highly overestimated

I'm not looking at adding 4 more fans, just that's the amount I could, if wanted too.

My GPU could be cooled more during game play. It's running at around 60-70 degrees C.

I have a pre-installed fan in the front of the case (which i cant take out) which isn't being used at the moement and was looking at adding one near the GPU to help coolage.

Having looked at what cable to get I come across people saying that the 3 pin connectors shouldn't push more than 2 fans unless getting one to plug into the PSU.

I have a EVGA 650W G2 PSU

I've got Corsair AF120/AF140's, so noise by these fans isn't a problem to me.

Yeah, I'm not looking to add 4 fans just one more AF140 and maybe enable the front case fan.
Just wasn't sure which cable to opt for.

Picking up on the other answer, yes, if plugged directly into the PSU the fans will run at full speed. If this is an issue you can purchase a separate controller unit that will allow you to adjust the fan speed, either automatically or manually, just depends upon how much you want to spend. I don't have any direct experience with external automatic fan controllers, so I can't comment much more.

Just curious, why are you not using the pre-installed fan?

Only having 3 connectors on the motherboard, it didn't make sense to me to use the pre-installed over a Corsair AF140.
I'm not looking at being able to adjust speeds etc unless its essential?

I just don't want to buy a splitter that isn't powered (if it needs to be) for a fan only to short circuit the motherboard and break something.
