Question PC connects to wifi, no internet

Hello everyone. I appreciate any help in advance.

The laptop is a dell G5 gaming laptop with windows 10, the desktop is an alienware aurora r8, windows 10. I have other devices (phone, tablet), that also occasionally experience wifi drops, but have wifi 95%+ of the time.

I have some very weird wifi issues with my computers. My landlord has Verizion FIOS with the router/modem that comes with the package. It was recently installed last September. I just moved in and have been having weird internet connectivity issues. (at our previous residence, the laptop never had any connectivity issues). It will say Connected, no Internet.

I have tried these fixes : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/no-internet-access-fix-windows/
(all the way from resetting the router to updating/downgrading drivers or command prompt ip resetting)

Sometimes resetting the router would improve connectivity for a few hours, but would eventually result in loss of connection.

As a work around, we got a wifi repeater with an ethernet cable. This would provide internet, but only if the laptop was also connected to wifi. Disconnecting from wifi, even while connected with ethernet, would result in no internet.

I recently bought a desktop, and continued to have the same problem. However, the first time I booted it up, it would not connect, I went and ate breakfast, and when I came back 20 minutes later it had connected. I didn't realize it was the same problem until I rebooted and lost internet.

As a weird work-around, if I do wifi tethering with a phone, then disconnect the phone, the pc will be able to connect to the wifi with internet. It will maintain this connection until rebooting or sleeping. I have tried unplugging the phone immediately, but this does not always result in the computer staying on internet . If I wait about 5 minutes, it seems to work 95%+ of the time. It seems that I need to connect to the wifi while the phone is tethered for it to work after unplugging the phone. I tried plugging the phone in and out, then connecting to wifi, and this does not produce any results.

Edit: Had a weird new thing happen. I connected the phone to tether, unplugged it after a few minutes even though it said it wasn't connected to internet. However, I still had internet while it said connected no internet, and a few minutes later switched over to saying it had internet connection (even though it had it before).

My goal would be to fix this so that the computers connect automatically to the wifi. Thanks again.

On each device ensure that only one network adapter (either wired or wireless) is enabled.

Not both.

After that:

On your laptop and on your new desktop run and post the results of "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt.

For both computers only the wifi adapter is enabled.

For the desktop that is currently on wifi (after using the tether work-around) here is the ipconfig:

Untether.

On laptop and desktop try running "ipconfig /flushdns" via the Command Prompt.

Then work to get each device (one at a time) up and running wirelessly via the router connection.

Reference link:

https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-dns-cache-817514

Remember that it can take the various devices a few minutes to "handshake" and re-establish the communication protocols being used amongst themselves.

The router has the responsibility to do most of that. So after each "ipconfig /flushdns" execution wait a few minutes and determine if full internet connectivity is restored for that particular device.

Yes it looks like there is an ipv4 address. From the laptop above when not connected to internet (but is to wifi) it is 192.168.1.243.

And i'm not sure what the router is. It came with the Verizon FIOS package.

How many people are using the "...Verizion FIOS with the router/modem that comes with the package" that your landlord got last year? Is this something just for you, or something that people in several units are sharing?

It's just me, my roommate, and my landlord. We both only have a handful of devices. He claims to have no issues, but I only really notice them when I'm gaming, so it's possible he does too.

I'm mostly trying to figure out if it's something to do with the verizon/router, my computer(s), or if it's a compatibility issue between the two.

Hi. I hope you have resolved the issue until now. My question for you is if the network you are connected to is public or private. The firewall can sometimes block your access, especially when you are connected to a public network (hotspots are in this category, too).

Screenshot of how to do it: https://www.screencast.com/t/PqFcwKiMj

If this didn't help then you can try what I did at the time:

  • Updating the network driver;
  • Moving my laptop closer to the router;
  • Buying a signal booster;
  • Scanning for viruses.

I found the solutions on a website called Solutionbay (no affiliation or promotion meant).
