PC Core Temperature Seemingly Overheating to 971°C

Hello there.
When this PC was built a few years ago, there were no problems with it... Until last month or so.
When I start my PC, temperatures are kinda fine, 45 to 60 degrees varying. But when I try to do something "extensive"(i.e. play League of Legends or Mirror's Edge Catalyst), SpeedFan tells me that the Core temp is... 971°C.

I'm playing ME Catalyst on Medium, and League on Very low with Eye Candy disabled, shadows off, and in Colorblind Mode.

This of course brings immense lag and sometimes even 15 to 30 second freezes(mainly in League) for an indefined, random amount of time. To put things straight, FPS plummets from 200-140 to 30-15 for seemingly no reason...

My GPU and CPU are, as follows:
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
CPU: AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor

My RAM is 8192MB.

Never overclocked nor tried to do it.
I recently cleaned the CPU cooling and reapplied thermopaste properly. It still overheats like this.
Dusted off the dust inside. Also I run my PC without the PC case's side.

It may be my crappy motherboard, but I'm not so sure about this.
(It's MSI MS-7641)

It most likely is the VRM that gets too hot; fortunately you already know it's a crappy motherboard that's know to have that issue. What CPU cooler are you using?

What does it look like? Is it a top-down style blower or a tower? Since you ask how to check it, I presume you probably are using the stock cooler. The easiest solution probably is to get a better motherboard.

For an fx 6300 you should be using amd overdrive and checking the thermal margin, other programs do not do very well with the fx lineup

If your idling between 45 and 60 then your definitely over heating the cpu on load, there seems to be conflicting information about max temp but anything over 65 for an fx chip is pretty bad.

Unless you are willing to live with the issue, you really should consider a better motherboard. If you can't afford it, then consider replacing the cooler with a top-down style like the AMD Wraith and add heat sinks to the MOSTFETs. That won't totally fix the issue, but it should happen less frequently.

Is your case ATX (7 slots in the back)? If so there are several good motherboards for it. If you have a micro-ATX case (4 slots in the back), then the Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 6.0) would be a good solution, but it works best when using a top-down style cooler. Honestly there are no really good micro-ATX motherboards for an FX CPU.

Another option is adding a fan which provides airflow over the area on the motherboard around the CPU socket. If it is indeed VRM throttling (which can be verified by checking to see if your CPU clockspeed is dropping when you see these framerate drops), this should help.

If you reinstall the cooler, don't forget to clean the old thermal paste and add new paste. If a fan on the side helped, then a good top-down CPU cooler should resolve the issue, particularly if heatsinks are added.

Can't rotate the tower cooler, only up or down. When side-rotated it can't be locked in the... "Socket", idk how to call it.

Then your options are somewhat limited. It's difficult to determine the clearance on a picture, but is there a way that you could add a small fan to cool the VRM? The best solution would be to replace the motherboard. Other solutions are to install a new top-down blower style cooler (a requirement with most inexpensive motherboards) or adding a small fan to cool the VRM. Installing heatsinks on the MOSFETs should also help.
