Question PC crashes into boot loop then blue windows recovery screen after trying to install GPU drivers.

My problems started with a BSOD after opening a game with the code critical process died. I was able to get a memdump analyzed that pointed to my GPU. After running a memtest86 confirming my RAM wasn't the issue, I bought a new GPU and the problems are persisting. On a fresh install of Windows my device manager is showing microsoft basic displayer adapter and when I try to install the drivers, it continues to crash. I had a spare r5 340 gpu that doesn't require much power and windows immediately recognized it. Wondering if this is a PSU or mobo problem because I have basically narrowed it down to that. Gone through the DDU process as well, nothing seems to work.

SPECS
mobo: b550m mortar wifi (MSI)
RAM: 16gb 3600 mhz ripjaws gskill
PSU: Seasonic focus 600 w
GPU: 1660 super / 6650 xt
CPU: r5 3600

well, there are no tests for motherboards. About only one is test everything else in another PC. Process of elimination

as For PSU, there are 3
the paper clip method - https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/what-is-the-paperclip-method-of-testing-a-psu.1336402/

or multimeter https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-manually-test-a-power-supply-with-a-multimeter-2626158

or in the BIOS to check the +3.3V, +5V, and +12V. - https://www.lifewire.com/power-supply-voltage-tolerances-2624583

but paper clip is really just to prove it works, and the BIOS doesn't show what its like under load, so you need a multi meter.

Unusual for a Seasonic PSU but I guess they can't all be perfect.

might help to test CPU as well

Got a new PSU coming in today. We will see if that works. I have read that when installing drivers it draws a lot of power and that is when the crash is occuring. If that doesnt work then I suspect MOBO. Just seems odd windows is recognizing and working with a lower powered r5 340 and not with my 6650 xt.

I haven't heard that before. I can't find any evidence. Its more likely the GPU uses more power once driver is installed as its not using Basic drivers any more.

odd a critical process died being tied to GPU
You PSU should have been able to run a 6650xt, it only needs 450w - https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6650-xt.c3898
GPU: 1660 super / 6650 xt
If you get a new mb at end, I would be tempted to try both GPU on it.

hope you right and it is PSU.

brand new install of windows 11, tried the driver install on my new 6650 xt and same result with new PSU. Idk what to do anymore. I guess it is the mobo somehow.

i would take it to a repair shop instead of throwing money at the problem without knowing cause. It gets too expensive

can you test GPU in another PC and see if it accepts drivers?
no i cant. The GPUs both post and can use the microsoft basic display adapter but both run into the same issue when trying to install the drivers. We know it isnt RAM or PSU. It has to be MOBO or CPU and i highly doubt the cpu went defective. I did have a power outage not too long ago that I think has caused all this. I am just thinking it is mobo at this point. resetting the CMOS battery as a last ditch

It could be. Maybe a power surge after.

you are probably right.
I wonder if prime 95 would prove anything

it tests CPU & RAM & PSU
2 of those should be fine

Problem with any tests is, if cause is MB, all tests are being run on it.

have you tried the 2nd slot on motherboard? maybe top one busted? I guess fact the old HD card works proves its not.

Having a new symptom, on UEFI fresh install with USB, pc is crashing mid install after entering email etc. Thinking it is mobo for sure now?

which GPU is in when you are installing?
I can't say for certain it is the motherboard, i really wish there were tests for them.

it probably is only as it throws same error on 2 different brand GPU.
I said stuff it and just upgraded by 3600 to a 5600x and got a new mobo and case hopefully that gets rid of my problems lol. I was due for an upgrade and just fed up. at that point it had to be the mobo or cpu so I just gave it up. No the card i had just ordered would do the same stuff with the drivers.
