I don't know why, but my pc keeps crashing when I update and file over 1gb. The pc screen stays on while the keyboard and mouse disable. The light on the pc also stays on. The screen freezes. That or the pc just reboots itself.

Specs:
AMD Athlon x4 750k
GTX 550 ti
Stock motherboard
16 gb RAM
EVGA 450 watt bronze power supply
1TB Hard drive
Windows 10

The pc plays the games just fine it's just updating them crashes it. I didn't replace the thermal paste for about 30 mins when I turned it on if that has to do with anything. The Temps are just when playing and updating the games. I'm switching pc cases soon, not sure when, and was going to see if that would help. But for now I'm clueless.

Solution
Sounds like it's a HDD issue since it doesn't happen during gaming. I've been in a similar situation with one of my WD Black's which was 2 months old where it would work fine until I was updating games (except BF4, which always triggered it). My PC would then do exactly as you described with hard freezes taking about a minute to resolve (either in a blue screen, restart or resuming).

Run CHKDSK on the drive and then WD HDD Utilities if that doesn't do anything. I found that using the WD utility caused a freeze up while CHKDSK didn't but you may have better luck. Also, my problem was a corrupted MFT Table on the drive which I couldn't get the WD software to fix.

It started happening almost right after I applied the new paste and installed the new cpu if that has to do with anything. But I'll look into what you said whenever I get home.

It might but running the disk checks should help narrow down the problem. You can get HDD problems when you suddenly shut down your PC (or if it shut down by itself due to temperatures exceeding the CPU limits which is normally about 60 degrees Celcius although this depends on the model). Considering you still had dried thermal paste on the cooler, you should have been alright as long as you didn't do use any demanding programs or CPU testing software. Either way, I would doubt there would be any damage to the CPU.

I did the command in the prompt that find and fixes the problems in the drive and I downloaded 3.1 gigs worth of CSGO so yeah it worked. Command prompt needs to be in administrator mode. The command was chkdsk (whatever drive you use): /f. If it ask you to do it when you restart, hit y and restart your pc.
