hello all great site this is my first thread thought i would say hi unfortunetly i have a problem hoping someone with great knowlege can help me out. let me start out by saying i have a basic understanding about pcs im no guru lol
what i want to do is tell you my story and maybe you people can come to a conclusion on whats wrong with my pc first off let me just say i traded for this pc and have had nothing but problems with it . what i am experiencing is crashes during games with intense graphics now i get great frame rates no choppyness so im asuming the graphics card is great i have tried multple driver sets with the same outcome so im assuming the crashes are a result in the processor i remember on my old pc that had dual core i got the same things happened and i raised the speed and no more crashes.
is it common for quad core and dual core to crash when running vista also my operating system is vista 64 bit ultimate i did have 8 gigs in the machine took 4 out to see if it would run better.
ok here is the specs i know
processor is intel core 2 quad q6700 @ 2.66 ghz what i dont understand is im looking at the specs with cpu-z and it reads
core speed 1600 mhz
multiplyer 6x
bus speed 266.7 mhz
rated fsb 1066 mhz
whats weird is i have a tool installed called n-tune and the multiplyer is at 10x and sometimes drops to 6x why does it go up and down ? is that whats causing my pc to crash the varriences in the multplyer if it drops to 6 while im playing would that cause the pc to crash or is that normal ? now this pc doesnt have a normal fan on processor i think its zalman it lights up and has a fan control over the processor so overclocking is no problem i just need to know other than raising the fsb from its current 266 i want to raise it to 300 so 300 times 10x would get me 3,0 ghz im sure i could do that no problem but i dont know what else i need to do to make sure that i have covered all the ends. i used a tool made by asus that overclocked from the desktop on my old pc so it was easy this i need to go into bios and i just want to see what you guys think my problem might be. here is a list of other stuff i have

motherboard nvidia 680iLT
bios phoenix technologies LTD
memory ddr2 dual channell 4 gigs corsair cm2x2048-6400c5 800 mhz
videocard nvidea 9800gt 1 gig of gdr3 core bus 600 mhz memory bus 900 mhz
i do run my games at1680 x 1050 resolution hooked up via a dvi cable with a onboard sound card
anyways the current games i play is nba2k9 ,mlb2k9, farcry2, arma assault, mlb front office manager, crysis, brother in arms hells highway,
those games all crash nba2k9 not as often ,the mlb frontoffice very rare, mlb every other game, crysis alot arma assault everytime at some point lol

thanks to all who try to help in advance.

ok here is a update i read somewere by disabling speed set and cle/eist then the multipler wont go up and down like a yo yo i checked with cpu-z and it now reads 10 without fluxing so my next step is to try it under full load.

played 2 games good so far one problem encountered when opening n tune and looking at mother board specs it shows fsb as red square im assuming the voltage is wrong even though i did not change anything it now is saying to hot is this a result from the processor allways being at 10 and not being able to go down if so then this is one gay procesor and its not a true 2.66 ghz is that why it goes up and down to keep it cool. like i said im not a guru but i find it annyoing that it would tell me this here is what the voltage is set for on the fsb 1.4 volts

First, the junk part there isn't the processor it's the 680i.
nVidia, fix the 680i chipset! Petition : [ powered by iPetitions.com ].

C1E and EIST are on all Core 2 CPUs. They are designed to lower the speed of the CPU when idle, and are completely normal. They should only need to be disabled when the OC is so high that you get instability, which you obviously have with that junk mobo. I usually disable EIST and leave C1E enabled, as they do similar things.

If I was you I would get a cheap P45 mobo and use that 680i as a Frisbee. You will be a lot happier in the long run.

If you want to try and salvage that piece of garbage mobo, then check the BIOS for the RAM voltage and make sure it is set to manufacturer specification and run Memtest86+ to check your RAM.

Go on Nvidia's forums and look for advice on possible specific voltage settings i.e., northbridge, FSB etc.

You should also run prime95 small FFTs with Core Temp to check temps. That should be done any time you build a machine.

o k i have tried many things it seems when ever i add software the drivers from nvidia dont work if i remove and freshly use durring games no crashes if i make any changes the drivers fail i did read there is a way to get off the p07 and run p31 or p32 on it by forcing the flash kinda risky my other bet is to revert back to xp and not deal with the vista headaches

im going to buy another motherboard i need some opinons on what will work with vista 64 and a gfx 9800 gt i need to know what users have a 98 gt card with vista running and no problems so basically what boards are you using ? or what do you sugest.
im thinking that 680i/LT is all junk

what motherboard that runs off lga775 would you recomend i want a great one but most important is how the mobo is im looking for stability it could be a crossfire board it dont have to be sli im thinking of getting ati card down the road 4870 x2 but i just want it to be stable for heavy gaming
thanks for all the info evon

so im better off dumping my q6700 and motherboard and go with ASUS Rampage II Extreme LGA 1366 and a i7 processor if i went the otherway your saying im out of date old stuff ?

dont be a hater on the 680i lt i got mine on a Q6600@3.6ghz on 450mhz fsb!!
