PC cuts to a black screen after random times on games?

I recently built my computer and it worked fine for a while. However, the PC has just started to have this problem.

On any demanding games (Skyrim, Fallout 4, Borderlands 2) I can play it for a random amount of time (5 mins to an hour) and then the screen will just cut to black and bring up no signal. The PC will still be on and the only way to fix it is a hard reset so I stopped using it because I didn't want to damage components.

The specs I have are:
Intel Core i7 4790K
MSI Gaming 7 Motherboard
MSI GTX 980
Vengeance 2x8GB RAM
550W power supply (I have a feeling it is this)
There is more info on the PC but I feel that should be enough to go on.

Thanks :)

I had the exact same problem recently. The screen would go black, but I couldn't use the computer at all, even though it was still on. Turns out that my GPU was overheating and adding some extra airflow completely fixed the problem.

You sure it's not a power saving thing? If you use a controller and never touch the keyboard or mouse it will follow your sleep/power settings. Increase the monitor sleep time. If their is something in bios that also controls timers check that to
