I've just finished building a pc. I powered it up, but I cannot get past the bios setup screen before it locks up. Which means i cannot fdisk or format the hard drive nor install the OS. I hit delete, the bios screen pops up and within about 20 seconds the pc freezes to the point where even if i hit the power button it wont shut off. (not unless i unplug it). I think maybe the cpu is overheating? All fans are operating though. Please help, i just spent like $1,500.00 on all the parts for this thing!

The system consists of: Pentium 4 2.4 (533mhz fsb), 512mb corsair twinx DDR 400, Western Digital 120gb HDD w/8mb cache, ATI Radeon 9700 pro graphics card, Gigabyte GA-SINXP1394 motherboard.

thanks to anyone who can help...conrad

Sounds like one of the following:

1. overclocking? turn it down a bit then.
2. generic power supply? get a good Enermax then.
3. heatsink? probably not seated correctly. did you remember to put arctic silver 3 on it before you seated the heatsink?
4. memory? did you put the dimms in correctly? try taking them out and switching what slots they are in.
5. video? you remember to attach that molex connector to your card?

try all those and let us know what works.

Definitely sounds like a temp or power issue. Next time you power up, go to the system status section of the BIOS if you have one. See if it reports any irregular temps.
