I set my PC to go to sleep after 2 hours but it never saves this whenever I restart or turn off the system as the power settings always moves to never.

How do I fix this issue so that it will save my power settings whenever I restart or shut it down?

Solution
what motherboard do you have?

see if this helps - https://winbuzzer.com/2020/11/26/wi...er_Plans_to_Default_Settings_Using_PowerShell

see if this does anything
right click start button
choose powershell (admin)
type SFC /scannow and press enter
once its completed, copy/paste this command into same window:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth
and press enter

SFC fixes system files, second command cleans image files, re run SFC if it failed to fix all files and restart PC

Try a clean boot and see if it changes anything - make sure to read instructions and make sure NOT to disable any microsoft services or windows won't load right - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

All clean boot does is stops programs, it doesn't remove them completely

if clean boot fixes it, it shows its likely a startup program. You should, over a number of startups. restart the programs you stopped to isolate the one that is to blame.

Its possible a startup program is changing the setting when you logon, do you have any applications from the PC maker installed as some of those control power plans.

I tried the clean boot but the issue still persists as I checked the power and sleep settings and the sleep always goes to never when I restarted the system.

And I don't think I have any startup programs that is causing this issue.

This is the motherboard. Supermicro C7H270-CG-ML

I tried them all and it still doesn't work. I tried resetting the power plans but the sleep timer is set to never when it restarts. I tried SFC method and tried setting the sleep timer before restarting and after that, it got set to never by default.

Then I tried the force lock power plan method but even there, the sleep is set to never whenever it restarts. This is getting annoying and I can assume that the windows update has something to do with this...

Its worth nothing that the display is set correctly to turn off after 15 minutes but sleep is never set correctly to 2 hours whenever the system restarts or gets shut down.

Its not normal for windows to change your settings

Do you have 2 PC? its possible its a setting on the cloud that changes it whenever you logon. If you use 2 PC, go to settings/accounts/sync settings
turn it off and see if it makes any difference. I don't think power settings are saved here but maybe.

I am curious what happens in safe mode

change power settings before doing this

  1. go to settings/update & security/recovery
  2. under advanced startup, click restart now button
  3. this restarts PC in a blue menu
  4. choose troubleshoot
  5. choose advanced
  6. choose startup options
  7. click the restart button
  8. choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
  9. Pc will restart and load safe mode

now check settings and see if its still set as it was. I wonder if its a driver doing it. If it doesn't happen in safe mode its likely a driver.

there is a chance settings doesn't work in safe mode, its been a while since I used it myself

I did like you said and changed the power setting before going into safe mode. But when I went to safe mode to check the settings, I can't see put pc to sleep option but the monitor setting is still there with 15 minutes as it should.

I asked help from microsoft discord and they tried to understand the issue at the registry. Thing is I don't have something called ProvAcSettingIndex from the registry under the power menu. Is that the main reason why the sleep settings never saves?

it appears since version 2004 some registry settings were removed and this might have been one of them

See post by Silichip in this thread, for a possible fix - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...d/01078d5e-4780-472d-be5c-40db5766df55?auth=1 - click the download link (I am assuming its safe since its on MS forums)

I downloaded it and I clicked on the following shortcuts on what I assumed would fix it.

Advanced Enable
Default Enable
Power Troubleshooter
Restore power

All of which I individually clicked and tried to set and restart but it never saves the sleep timers and always reverts to 15 min for monitor and Never for PC.... Is this issue by any chance occurring to you or anyone else? Just set the sleep timer through power and sleep settings, restart and then check if the settings are actually saved? Cause I really can't find anyone but me having issues with this.

My version is 19042
