PC doesn't turn on at all

Hello everyone,

I just finished my first ever PC build only to find out... the PC doesn't turn on. What could be the cause of this? I tried unplugging and re-plugging cables, I constantly turned the PSU switch to the On position, the Power, H.D.D. Led and Reset SW cables are all plugged in correctly.

My parts:
Enthoo Luxe Full Tower Case,
Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 5 Motherboard,
Intel i5-6600K 3.5GHz Unlocked,
Sapphire Nitro R9 390 8GB DDR5,
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler with two fans (P12 and P14 I think),
Crucial 8GB DDR4 RAM,
EVGA Supernova 850 G Gold Power Supply.

I also have all the other stuff but they're not relevant.

The CPU/PSU cable with two CPU ends is connected to the CPU 2x4 (both ends),
the MB cable is connected to the 24-pin,
one cable with two split PCI-E ends is connected to the VGA (both ends),
one SATA/PERP cable is connected to the two 12V Input cables of my PC case (one for PWM and the other is for the PC button LED, I believe), although this is unnecessary for powering up.

The fans:
The cable labeled "To Motherboard CPU fan" from the PWM is plugged into the primary CPU_FAN, the two heatsink fans are both plugged into CPU_OPT via Y-split cable.

For some reason I have a suspicion the Power Supply might be faulty, but I have no evidence to support this claim.

Any suggestions?

Well, I can't really do that since I don't happen to have a paperclip or anything equivalent to it (lol), and my 24-pin only has black wires, so that's extra pain.

Perhaps check out these pics and take a look at the configuration?

Some of it might not be too obvious and the quality isn't top-notch either, but I think you should get the general idea.

I'd try testing the board outside the case, only CPU and CPU fan installed, 24 and 8 pin power cables connected. No other components/wires. Start the board by shortly touching with a screwdriver the 2 pins on the motherboard corresponding to the case power button. See if the CPU fan does spin.

IMO everything should be in order. I installed the CPU, added a half-pea sized drop of thermal paste in the middle and applied the heatsink on top using the spead method, then added the two fans on the sides of the heatsink, installed the RAM, installed the PSU, screwed the motherboard in the case, connected all the cables and installed the GPU, + installed the two PCI-E cables. I don't understand where the problem lies, I checked everything and everything seems to be in place. The PSU is brand new so it kinda boggles my mind when I think about it somehow being defective. Perhaps the PSU power cable is a US one and thus doesn't work in the UK (where I currently live)? But then again, the plug has three pins like the ones in UK.

Do you mean the two pins you'd normally stick the Power Switch +- cable into? If so, it doesn't work.

Okay, how much length do I need to shorten them? Because I just rammed in two small screwdriver heads and the fans aren't spinning. I also tried a 1 cm needle into the PS-ON and a screwdriver head into a Ground.

The needle sticks through and outside, near the wires. I suppose that's enough length (it's impossible to see the metal pins inside). So yeah, I just sticked in two needles and nothing happened.

That's so weird. Could EVGA really do this? Maybe I got an US cable, though it has 3 pins (not sure whether US plugs have 3).

Anyway, the only essential parts for powering up a PC are the PSU and CPU, correct? Because the heatsink is only required for the CPU not to overheat, and the VGA, RAM and everything else is optional in regards to turning the system on.

Thanks for replying so fast!

I'll try as soon as I get my hands on one.

I would also like to know what are the essential parts for turning a PC on so that I could determine the cause of the problem more easily. Please make a list if you can (including only the necessary PSU and PC cables).

Well you know what, I tried everything out and the PSU just refuses to work.

Now I checked whether electricity is flowing through the Power Cable by sticking in two needles and it does (stung my finger a bit, lol).

I tried both the case fans (it's a 12V input short SATA cable connected to the PWM, which has case fans connected to it via short 3 pin cables, and I used my SATA cable to connect it to the PSU), and the CPU Heatsink fan/s (3 pin cable/s connected to the motherboard's CPU_FAN 4-pin). The CPU/PSU power cable (1x4 or 2x4, doesn't matter) is also connected to the motherboard, right near the CPU. With all of this, both with and without the case fans, no matter how I wiggle the needles inside the MB's PS-ON and Ground pins, the PSU doesn't work. I even tried flipping the ON/OFF switch constantly.

So with all of this, I come to a conclusion. Either the PSU is faulty, or the Power Cable somehow doesn't fit it, even though it came with the PSU and electricity is flowing through.

My PSU does have warranty though. I think I'll try a different Power Cable first and if it still doesn't work, I'm sending it back to Amazon.
