THE PROBLEM

I've been having a recurring issue for the last month or two which I've been trying to fix without success.

The problem is that my machine powers off (hard shutdown) then instantly begins to reboot itself at seemingly random times.

This only seems to happen while playing games, it has happened in more than one so I've concluded it's not an issue with a single piece of software.

It does seem to be more prevalient in one game in particular which is Hearts of Iron IV, not very demanding as far as graphics go but as its a grand strategy I imagine it could be demanding in other regards.

However it still crashes while playing other games such as Witcher, Skyrim and Battlefront just seemingly not as frequently.

I've done some troubleshooting which I've listed below.

  • ■ Changed power cables and extension cables.
    ■ Updated GPU drivers.
    ■ Performed a windows ‘mdsched.exe’ memory test, no problems detected.
    ■ Paid a local technician to replace the thermal paste on my GPU lowering it's temperature.

I've been monitoring the temperature while playing these games and the GPU doesn't appear to be reaching temps that would be a problem. Considering it crashes during games like HOI IV where the temp is no more than 60 celsius really, not sure it's a temp problem.

LATEST INCIDENT

My latest crash was while playing Witcher 3.

I used GPU-Z to record a dump file of GPU sensors, I've uploaded the dump with the link below. The last entry at the bottom would have been the final one before the crash, as you can see the temp is a steady 71 celsius almost the entire way through the game session. (Had to upload a file rather than paste here because it didn't align with the headers correctly)

Looking through reliability monitor there's an event "Windows was not properly shut down" 16:51. All the technical information reads is that it was unexpected.

I also find this which is 16:52 (not 16:51) but seemed potentially interesting:

Looking through the event viewer for 16:51 I found the following application events in this order:

  • ■ The EventSystem sub system is suppressing duplicate event log entries for a duration of 86400 seconds. The suppression timeout can be controlled by a REG_DWORD value named SuppressDuplicateDuration under the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\EventLog.
    ■ The description for Event ID 0 from source igfxCUIService1.0.0.0 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    Service started/resumed
    ■ The User Profile Service has started successfully.
    ■ The description for Event ID 0 from source AdobeARMservice cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    Service started
    ■ (Bonjour) Service initializing
    ■ (Bonjour) Service initialized
    ■ (Bonjour) Service started
    ■ The description for Event ID 0 from source LogiRegistryService cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    LogiRegistryService
    LogiRegistryService in OnStart

CONCLUSION

This has happened twice while playing games in the last couple of hours, while watching movies or just browsing the internet I have yet to experience this problem.

If anyone could help me solve this issue it would be greatly appreciated as I'm starting University in a week and will be needing my PC to use Unity game engine for work.

Signs seem to be pointing to this being a PSU problem.

Thanks in advance for any assistance, please ask if you require more information!

Right I've concluded that it could be the PSU. However when I spoke to the guy at the repair shop he's sure it isn't as he said it wouldn't be an intermittent problem, if the PSU was faulty it would be more clean cut. He thinks it's my graphics card still. Any opinions on what he said as this has put me off buying a new PSU and put me back to square one?
