Apologies if I posted this in the wrong place, if I need to, I can repost.

Problem
When playing games my entire system will freeze/lockup eventually and I have to hit the reset button to reboot. The screen remains on the last frame displayed when it crashes and the sound studders repeatedly, though sometimes it just makes a sharp sound and then silence. The crash seems to happen randomly regardless of what the level of action or activity. I have exhausted my ideas for finding the problem. I have a hunch that it likes to crash during sound events but it is hard to tell because even "quiet" moments in games are still driving sounds.

History
I previously thought this crash was caused by another games (blacklight retribution) installation causing corruption of the .net files in windows 7. Things like THX audio, LucidVirtu, and IAstor would report during startup that they wouldn't work. I reinstalled the whole OS after insuring bios was up to date and reinstalled all drivers in recommended order (chipset first and so on) before installing software. Installation went smoothly. All previously non working items were now working fine. I was hoping that took care of it and for a while all seemed well. The next day the system froze exactly the same way it used to while playing BL2. I had thought the problem was fixed but its not the .net files after all.

The system freezes and I have seen no dump files in windows after rebooting. I have no idea if its power related, cooling related, or what.

Here's the DXDIAG file that smart people like. Me no understand it.

I think I figured one thing out. Thanks to SLI (which I had previously disabled trying to isolate this) I think I know what the 4 microsoft driven HD Audio devices represent. The entire time we have been working on this one of the vid cards was disabled. I did this cause I thought that two cards were eating up the available power and I wanted to keep things simple. I reconnected it and rebooted windows. 4 new devices showed up on top of the previous 4 but they had yellow exclamation points on them and identified themselves as nvidia devices. I clicked on the volume icon to take a look and windows automatically searched and installed drivers for the devices now there are 8 High definition devices in the device manager. The videocards both have HDMI output ports on them for sending stuff to the a TV. Perhaps that is what keeps coming up as an audio driver when its more like a volume channel. Each card must have 4 of something its reporting to the Sound panel. There is no other sound drivers on the machine.

The Realtek and Creative sound drivers are still uninstalled and the hardware is disabled in BIOS.
2 and a half hours of Borderlands 2 have not had a crash, yet. Unfortunately the crash has never shown a steady crash rate to tell if this isn't happening, or can still do it.

When I stated I needed more information its because I have no idea what the thought process is on this. I'm still not even sure what part of my original posts led you to focus on the sound as part of our efforts. Was there something in the dxdiag or in the description of the problem? I ask because I would like to improve on my own troubleshooting skills.

The only update for windows has to download is something for windows defender. I had already disabled and removed the other card previously thinking it might help. So far it has had zero effect on the crash both in or out.

did you disable physx in the nvidia control panel........... and did you try uninstalling the card that's in there now and putting the other one in it's place. you could also try running it in the other pci-e slot to see what happens.

this time around it sounds as if heat is causing an issue so lets try and work on that for a while. I might also suggest pulling the heatsink and fan off the processor,, reapplying thermal paste and putting the HS and F back on.......... motherboard removal does best job.... but anyways lets move ahead.

all fans are clean and video cards and processor don't have a build up of crap on the cooling fins ?

hard drive is well maintained ? clean up and defrag and did you ever do a scan disc and recovery ?

you said something about net frame work up top. you didn't delete any of that from the add/remove did you ? and what was it, do you remember ?

hit start and type msconfig in the search box. look under "services" ( check box at bottom to filter microsoft stuff. see what's running and uncheck what you don't need. also keep eyes peeled for any more sound related stuff that may run at start up other than what you really need.

also look under "start up" and see what's there.

I was going to run a few more tests without the sound. The crash to desktop may have been an honest software crash that time. All the hardware in the system is about 3-4 months old. The .net issue was on the old install of windows that has since been replaced. The hard drive was formatted before the new win 7 install. The system has no other programs running on it at startup. I will run a few more tests tonight but I will run CPUID and monitor the heat levels at the same time.

It takes so long to run each test. I saw some videos about crashes like this when searching youtube. The game that crashed the same way for those guys was battlefield 3. Their crashes however would happen with 5 minutes of playing. Mine can take hours to replicate. I think the longest my rig played Borderlands 2 without a crash was like 5-6 hours. Just long enough to get confident that the last thing you tried might have worked. Its starting to wear me down.

5 more tests. Five more freezes. Haven't changed anything from the last post. All sound drivers are still off/or disabled(the only thing in there are those HDMI volume controls and I have those disabled). I used hardware monitor to monitor heat and all cores and items are within norms. Even around the time it crashes. The fan speeds remain consistant, especially since I have no other sounds to distract me from listening to them ;). Tested with both vid cards individually as well. No change.

At this point I don't see how it could be sound related.

we got out of 1 problem and now to another. I said heat in my last post and right now that's what I think this is. okay, so you kept an eye on cpu temps.

when I mentioned removing 1 card and disabling physx was to try and help see if that was a problem. having 2 cards sorta makes the top card hotter. and with physx working that adds to it. ( disable physx in nvidia control panel ).

the power circuitry on the 560's was a bear to deal with on several cards. nvidia really blew it here.... as did board "partners".

you can try downloading an app from nvidia ( or elsewhere ) and try under clocking the card a little bit. this will help lower the temps.

you can try getting a fan close to the back end of the card and try and cool that part of the card. you can try running with the case side off. that will help heat from building up in the cabinet........... little early for me yet, get back later.
things to try...........

Should I go ahead and turn back on the realtek in bios and reinstall the sound drivers? If so should I...
1) let windows install its own drivers for it
2) use the older drivers from asus's website listed for the mobo
3) use the latest drivers for HD realtek series

On to temps...
Yes indeed the top card does run hotter than the bottom card. Airflow is restricted for the top card but I keep it clean and have 2 120mm fans on the side vent of the case. Those hit the cards directly. According to the hardware monitor the max temps for the cards are 79c and 53c. While idling their temps are 45c and 34c.

The power thing you mentioned is troubling. Man I hate that feeling like I bought the wrong thing after the fact. :(

Important to note the crash used to occur on the old installation before I had two cards. The second card is somewhat recent. The frequency of the freeze crash has remained unchanged with one or two cards.
Also, this might help in the future or might not, but I went ahead and installed the Asus ROG connect feature on my laptop and on the desktop. I can watch voltages and some heat settings on the laptop externally while I am testing. Most of the bars remained steady, nothing spiked or dropped unusually before or after the crash.

why would you want to reinstall the drivers if turning them off fixed a major issue ? and no, I wouldn't let windows auto install anything.

the heat........... again........... pull 1 card/turn off physx/put fan on rear of card/maybe even under clock it a bit. take side off case.

the app for watching temps.......... not going to tell you what the power circuitry is doing.

refresh my memory......... machine always crashed. removing auto updates and all those extra sound drivers worked .... to an extent ?........... so now the machine runs for hours before it crashes again ?

Perhaps I didn't type that out correctly. The sound drivers have changed nothing. The crash is still unpredictable as to when it will happen. Nothing has changed. I only stated that the longest it has ever run without crashing was about 5-6 hours at the longest, I will add that that wasn't even with the same game. Sorry if that dint make sense before. So if it crashes the same without the sound drivers or the card active then I am doubtful they are to blame.

The problem is the program.

Been playing it for two days now without a crash. Added sound back in, still no crashing. All settings set to max, except PHYSX which is set to low. No crash after 7 hours both single and multiplayer. It seems that BL2 has some issues with PHYSX set to high mode. All that work and it was just a setting inside the game. I guess I started this at the wrong end. Lesson learned.

I appreciate all the help along the way, I really do. See below as to what it would be like without dudes like you on these forums. All that hardware work wasn't for nothing though, the one video card that I was running is running hotter than the newer identical card. The newer card runs about 18 C cooler than its older twin brother. I'm gonna replace the stock thermal paste on the gpu of the older card and see if that helps it. While it was running hotter it was never running into danger zones of the 80 or 90s. The hottest it ever ran at was about 72 C. So I have decided to clean the die and reapply the thermal paste with better stuff. I ordered some Articlean from Articsilver which I have heard good things about.

Its a good thing there are forums like this. 2k support declared they wouldn't help me blaming windows. They said I would have to get Microsoft to help fix this issue as came up in the msinfo file.

I went thru the fault reporting for the KERNELBASE.dll file. Ok, I'm not the best in the world at reading this stuff, but even I can notice that the launcher.exe is being referenced. They said I need to go to MS tech support for before they could help me. They stated that this is whats causing the crash. That's such a well thought out answer considering that the launcher isn't running once you start the game and my issue is IN GAME. Windows doesn't report jack once it freezes which is why bluescreen viewer has no dump files for it so I am pretty sure the msinfo file wont have anything on it either. I decided to check out what other programs were crashing due to this file. Things like Civ 5 and a few start up items like Virt-u. I also looked at the time codes associated with them. These things they cited were the app launchers that I would repeatedly hit over and over again when they refused to launch due to something with Steam (in the case of CIV5 once it started running it has never had a single crash), or I deliberately did something to my system like pulling a video card and rebooting in the case of Virt-u. In short they had nothing to do with the game program crashing.

Either way, official tech support from them is complete cop-out. You send a ticket with all the files they want like dxdiag and msinfo like in their instructions, and they send you back a ticket right away asking for your dxdiag and msinfo so they can get more information. It doesn't matter that you can see the files as links in their own ticket system.

Once the initial ticket is answered, they wont respond to you again. Unless of course you start sending them back responses constantly and in the ned suggest that you will just open a new ticket with all the previous tickets cut and pasted into it. That worked like a charm. That's when they begrudgingly write back and say its not their problem.

These tech support setups today simply suck, its all based on numbers/day instead of numbers/solved. They really only want their staff to hit paste and change a few lines to give you the impression that they actually read it. But even the layman can tell they really didn't read it cause nothing in their response fits. What is the purpose of having a system like this, completely pointless. There not even helping the kind of people that really DO need to check if the system is plugged in.

As you can see the help we get on places like Tom's Hardware from guys like you is really the only safe ports in the storm. The above story is to outline the helpful advice here from the useless support software merchants provide.

thanks, really appreciate the compliment. most people like to put me on their ignore list or just out right hate me for some of my opinions. LOL, LOL.............

the next card you get will probably not run so hot as they are starting to work on power consumption more these days. The 560's really work hard for what they are, "glorified" gtx260's.

so now you know what to do, turn some settings back when things get a little choppy or whatever and that will keep you from needing to buy a new card for a while. Good Luck and thanks again............................

I bought the second card about the same time I started playing BL2. I had always planned on it from when I bought the system just didnt want to drop the extra money for a second card right away so I stuck it on the newegg wishlist until it was onsale. Is the general consensus on SLI here on the forums good? Do people recommend a crazy power powerful card, cheaper SLI twin cards, or a decent card paired with one of those PHYSX cards?

I found that purchasing one really good card always outweighed cross fire or sli-ing.

I used to buy one card and in the future buy a second but by that time there was something that was always better in single card format.

maybe there might be a benefit when cards are first new and you buy them together but from my standpoint it's never worth it...... and I just did it with 6950's....( because nvidia was dragging it's but releasing new cards ) .... but ended up running the cards separately anyways.
