PC Fans spin for 10-20 seconds, computer passes POST, but monitor cannot display signal.

My computer was working fine for a year, but I decided that I should connect the case fan to the moBo. I went to do this, the case fan started spinning but I saw what I thought was smoke come from the mobo. It could have been dust but there was a smell too.

All of a sudden, my monitor displays "no hdmi signal " on start up. The gpu and cpu fans spin on start up, the computer does a single beep(like it did when everything worked) , but after 10 - 20 seconds of fan spinning my computer powers down. It then automatically boots up and the process repeats.

I feel that I may have fried my components. I try boot without the GPU attached, exact same process happens.

Once again I require advice from the experts of these forums. I feel it could be the mobo, I restarted the CMOS by taking out the battery but no joy. Held the power on button on from PC case with mains cord out, no luck.

I know very little about what's happened but I feel it's the mobo. It could be the psu, but the fans spin for a good 10 seconds roughly.

To summarise: Computer starts as normal ( fans spins at normal speed, lights work, POST correctly) but it only stays on for 10 seconds, shuts down, and reboots continously - all while monitor says "no hdmi signal connected". Hdmi cable works and so does monitor when plugged into Xbox.

Any help would be appreciated a lot.

if the fan still plugged into the port?? if it is the mb anti short may still be seeing the shorted fan port and turning itself off. both mb and power supply if they feel a dead short they will shut down. on your mb if you cant see any damage on the mb rma back to the vendor. if you take it out of your rig and you see a big burn mark on the bottom of the mb near the fan plug that you tried to use. the mb vendor may not take the rma. make sure that that was a fan port and not a cd rom audio port. only time a fan port will short lile that is cross the pins or pluged a fan in backwards and the power went down the sence line of the mb.
