PC for encoding video

Hi everyone, I'm planning to build a new pc as soon as possible. The max price is 2500$. It will be mainly for encoding video from dvd's to various format.

This is what I am planning to purchase:

- Processor - Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ
- CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
- Motherboard - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
- Video Card - MSI N285GTX SuperPipe OC GeForce GTX 285 1GB

here are my suggestions, then i will give you a better build:

CPU: good

CPU COOLER: get the cooler master 212 instead

MOBO: get the asus p6x58d instead

VIDEO CARD: ati is way on top now, so i would get either a 5850 is a good a lot, or a 5770 if you game a little

MEMORY: there are better sets out there, and you wanna make sure it is below cas latency 8

HDD 1: RAPTORS!!?? no, for that price, get a faster, safer, cheaper ssd

HDD 2: idk why you have 3, i would assume you want a raid 1, so i would get 2 f3s or 7200.12s

PSU: overkill for what you have, i would get no more than 750 watts

CASE: seems a bit overkill, but oki doki

final price is 2184.80$.. after i got the first build, it was only 1800$, so i got a much better ssd (2x capacity and more speed) i got the 5870 over the 5850, then i upgraded the psu and case, and got better ram and 2x more ram, bringing me up to the total of 2184.80$ :lol: even so i still left 325$ for you to play with, so you cant really upgrade the build much more, but you could always get a better monitor (or a new one :lol or just make all the peripherals be awesome (speakers, keyboard, mouse). then again, you always could start payments for a new house :lol: anyway...hope this helped

I have a couple of question for you:

1- Why do you suggest the ASUS P6X58D instead of the p6t?

2- The memory you suggested is not available on newegg.ca bu I found a kit from corsair CMX6GX3M3C1600C7. what do you think?

3- As for the video card the sofware we use need PureVideo V4 so ati is not an option.

4- when you say cheaper ssd, what I see is 80gb for 305$... that sound's like a lot more than 179$ for a 150gb velociraptor.

5- Whe need raid 5 for the data.

1. Same price, but you get USB 3/SATA III support.

2. That works.

3. Then get an equivalently priced nVidia.

4. VRs are retarded right now. Either get a 500 GB platter drive (Samsung Spinpoint F3, Seagate 7200.12 in either 500 GB or 1 TB or WD 2 TB only). These are faster at 1/3 of the price. The same priced was probably thinking it was the 300 GB version.

5. RAID 1 is better for data backup than RAID 5. It's a complete backup, not something that will need to be rebuilt. It's also cheaper.

Agree with MadAdmiral on all points except #5.

RAID 1 is the most expensive option for RAID (well, other than RAID 10), since you don't gain any added capacity over a single disk.

RAID 5 is the compromise between data availability and performance. Reading data will be faster than RAID 1, but writing will likely be slower. If you're serious about RAID, and $2500 CDN is your budget, I would recommend looking at getting a RAID card. Don't go with motherboard-based RAID if your data is at all critical. And of course, make sure to take regular backups.

If it's not too far out of budget, you might consider adding a 4th drive and going with RAID 10 or using that 4th drive to expand your storage capacity if you stick with RAID 5.

If you're not gaming, I'd say go with whatever ATI 5650 or 5750 you want. Those are underpowered for gaming, but should be fine for displaying 1080p.

If you are gaming, go with a 5870.

No gaming at all but we need the nvidia for purevideo.

If you need a nVidia card, just get any that are similarly priced to the ones above.

If you're not gaming, but still need a lot of graphics power, look into nVidia's workstation cards (their Quadro line). They're pricey, but focus on high quality detail and are extremely reliable.

Another question. Is 1 ssd faster then 2 X 7200rpm drive in raid 0?

Yes. SSDs are faster by an order of magnitude. Standard HDDs can't touch them.

Why do you think you need such a large PSU? Even a 500W PSU would be plenty for your system. I would go with the HAF 922 instead of the 932. It's only slightly smaller and considerably cheaper. Here's a combo deal to check out:

There are also some higher wattage PSU's in combo with the case, but they aren't needed for your stated hardware or use.

The HAFs are pretty quiet as it is. I can't think of a better case off the top of my head.

shortstuff's right on the size. If you still want a 750W unit, here's a couple I like.

The SeaSonic 750W 80+ Gold unit, but it's $180. A cheaper, less efficient unit is the Silverstone 750W 80+ Silver for $130.
