PC freeze while gaming after CPU Upgrade

Hi guys,

Yesterday I have upgraded my CPU from i5-7600K to i7-7700K. Also, I have overclocked it to 4.8GHz at 1.29v. I have run a Prime95 test for two hours and everything looks fine. But when I'm playing GTA5 (about 2 hours playtime) the PC freeze randomly (the screen and the sound freeze) and I have to restart it manually. Also, the system is 100% loaded. Strangely, I haven't experienced the same issue when I play BF1 (again 2 hours playtime). I have installed the latest BIOS version and the latest Chipset driver and the issue persist.

My system:
MB: ASUS Prime Z270-P
CPU: i7-7700K (@4.8GHz/1.29v)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L RGB
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 3GB (@2100/9000MHz)
RAM: HyperX Fury 2x8GB DDR4 @2133MHz
PSU: FSP Aurum S 500W 80+ Gold
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm
Fan: 4x120mm

A result from PSU calculator: https://outervision.com/b/4LR0Zz

Is it possible that the issue comes from the PSU? I would be grateful if you suggest me what to do or how to fix the issue.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Kashimi,

Thank you for your reply.

I have checked the system events log and I have noticed the following 4 errors for the past 24 hours:

I have set the CPU at 4.7GHz/1.29v and tested it again with GTA5 (2 hours playtime) and the issue didn't occur.

Then your CPU overclock probably wasn't entirely stable. If you want 4.8GHz you may have to bump your voltage up a bit more.

This is true, you should adjust voltage and run more stability tests. CPU will freeze if overclock is unstable.

OK, but the overclock at 4.8 was stable when I ran Prime95 test. I don't have problems with BF1. Why the CPU freeze only when I play GTA5?

Prime95 (2 hours test) - stable
BF1 (2 hours playtime) - stable
GTA5 (about 2 hours playtime) - freeze

It should crash with Prime95 and BF1 as well. There is no logic in that.

Software stresses the CPU in different ways. It is possible to pass a Prime95 stress test and still be unstable when trying to run something else (which is why some recommend a 24 hour run to ensure stability). Do also keep in mind that Prime95 Small FFTs are recommended for stability testing, a Large FFT or Blend test isn't nearly as stressful if you were using one of those. Evidently GTA V is doing something different than Prime95 or Battlefield 1 and your overclock isn't stable at 1.29V unless you drop back to 4.7GHz. You may just have to bump up to 1.3 or 1.31 to get 4.8GHz stable when running GTA V.
