Since about two weeks ago my PC started to freeze randomly. When it froze there was this stuttering sound. I also had to hard reset it. It used to happen when playing a game and having a Youtube video on the side. (I have two monitors) The freezing has gotten more frequent and it now seems to happen randomly outside of games as well, even when I have nothing open. I finally got a BSoD with a bug checking string of CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. BlueSCreenView seems to be pointing at ntoskrnl.exe. I have also noticed that the screen is starting to tear a bit in both videos and games.

With the one BSoD came two dmp files, Which I have uploaded here

I have tested Youtube videos with both Firefox and Chrome and the crashing happens in both of them. Scrolling fast in Chrome seems to also give some screen tearing.

My pc specs are:

wiping drive would only help if problem isn't hardware.

I saw all the 2013 drivers but that is why I reminded self this is a win 8 PC, there may not be newer. I haven't included any below I already mentioned above.

First non windows file is Malwarebytes from 2017
next is Nvidia GPU drivers which you have upgraded
next is xhcdrv.sys (Dated Wed Jan 2 2013) - VIA Labs eXtensible Host Controller driver
next is viahduaa.sys (Dated Tue Aug 11 2015) - VIA High Definition Audio Function Driver

Don't normally see any windows drivers among 3rd party but his debugger is for win 10 so could be reason.

part of windows:
The first 4 sys files mentioned in gardenman's pastebin are 2013 and yet they also part of windows so can't really...

NTOSKRNL = windows kernel. It handles all driver requests, power management, and memory management. It sits between Hardware and Applications. It got blamed but its not the cause

can you go to c/windows/minidump and copy the files there to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here

someone with right software to read them will help decode them so we can help you fix it :)

Hi, I ran the dump files through the debugger but only 1 of the files was useful. It may be because I'm using a Windows 10 debugger, or it may be because the 2nd dump file was corrupted. Anyway, I got the following information: https://pastebin.com/FdZVnmbZ

File: 080917-21093-01.dmp (Wed Aug 9 15:43:41 2017)
BugCheck: [CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (EF)] {ffffe0010cf8a8c0, 0, 0, 0}
Probably caused by: ntkrnlmp.exe (Process: wininit.exe)

I can't help you with this. Wait for Colif someone else to reply. Good luck.

Wininit is the file that runs windows. It fails, you go nowhere. Can't say I ever seen it crash before?

wininit.exe is a critical system process the Windows requires in order to function. Ending this process will likely result in a critical system error in which you’ll need to restart your computer. As you can see in the chart below, wininit.exe is at the top of the process tree for all of windows services, including svchost.exe.

which revision is your motherboard? is it revision 5 (based on bios version)
Have to remember this isn't win 10 (that was a mental note)

old drivers that might cause problems
AppleCharger.sys(Dated Wed Oct 24 2012) - Name is deceptive... GIGABYTE On/Off Charge driver. Has been known to cause errors, remove it.
Rt630x64.sys (Dated Tue Jun 12 2012) - Realtek PCIe drivers (not sure if there any newer ones around)
ViaHub3.sys (Dated Wed Jan 2 2013) - VIA USB 3 Drivers (not sure if any newer ones)

why are you using nvidia drivers from 2016? Should be newer ones of those for sure.

I downgraded the Nvidia drivers to see if those were to blame for the freezing, so I searched for the most stable ones. I have reverted those to the newest version again and I updated the Realtek PCIe drivers as well. I couldn't find a newer version of the VIA USB 3 Driver. I also deleted the AppleCharger.sys. The freezing is still going on, especially when playing games. The screen tearing seems to have gotten a bit less. My revision is 5.0

Must the AppleChargerSrv.exe also be deleted?

seems to me it could be any driver causing this, and looking at the list of drivers installed there are numerous 2013 listed, that could be cause this issue. I would start with mouse, usb, video drivers.
remove all overclocking your have on cpu, until this is resolved.

I updated all the drivers to newest versions, but the problem is still persisting.

Could this be a hardware problem? The freezing seems to happen with games. The screen tearing seems to happen when scrolling a lot.
Could wiping the hard drive and starting clean with a fresh install of windows 8 be a viable solution? I have everything important backed-up so I wouldn't have any problem with doing this.

wiping drive would only help if problem isn't hardware.

The first 4 sys files mentioned in gardenman's pastebin are 2013 and yet they also part of windows so can't really upgrade them.
next is usbohci.sys (dated Sat Oct 10 2015) - OHCI USB Miniport Driver (Part of windows)
next is usbhub.sys (Dated Sat Oct 10 2015) - Default Hub Driver for USB (Part of windows)
next is Volsnap.sys (Dated Fri Mar 11 2016) - which is part of windows volume shadow copy (odd to see among 3rd party drivers)
next is netbt.sys (Dated Fri May 13 2016) - MBT Transport driver, which is also part of windows

more parts of windows than actual 3rd party drivers. usb and audio seem to share same irq's so could be why it freezes and explain stuttering mouse.

Solution
Problem with Windows 7 & 8 upgraded to win 10, I found in my experience (done this about 10 times now on test beds PCs) and in 75% of the cases, about 3-12 months later the system starts getting sluggish, random crashes, and finally BSOD's and in all those times the only proper solution I found was to flush the drive (kill partition) and install Windows 10 on them, and non have crashed since. in a similar experience I flushed and restored the systems back to windows 8 & 8.1, and they remained stable for the same amount of time, I then upgraded one of them again, and found it becomes unstabl again later on, I cannot quantify how often this happens in the "wild" but in my experience stay with windows 8.1 or backup files and flush drivbe for fresh install of Win10 are so much less troublesome then upgrades that are like handling a live grenade, eventually it will blow up.

yes this is my humble, personal, experiences, Pc range from Dual cores Q8200 to I5-4xxx Series systems, yes I may be "generalizing a bit" on my conclusions, as "uncontrolled as one can have as a real life computer is handle not in a lab environment."

if this were win 10 I would agree as getting all the patches and updates takes less time on win 10. I realise there are cumulative updates for win 8.1 now but still a lot more patches to get to latest. Would be nice to think ISO on web site is current version like Win 10 is, I am not convinced they did that or have no evidence anyway.

Fresh install does mean less drivers around to get in the way.
