Pc freezes when CPU is overclocked, please help!

Hi

First time overclocker here. I have an fx 8320 cpu overclocked to 4,2 ghz at 1.4 voltage and an Asus m5a97 R2.0 motherboard.

So the thing is, whenever i open google chrome or watch a video, my pc randomly freezes and the reset button leds disappear (I'm unable to reset my pc when this occurs) , but during stress tests (I ran an stability test in Aida64 for 40 minutes) and games everything seems to be fine.

Now, i've set my motherboard to default settings (meaning my CPU is running at 3,5 ghz) and SURPRISE! , i don't have that issue anymore...

What could it be? do i need to add more voltage? do i need to update my motherboard? (i've never flashed bios or anything like that) what can i do?

any help is greatly appreciated!

Not all chips are created equal, your chip is not stable at 4.2ghz @1.4volts. What are your temps like? Temps should be used to decide if you want to add more vcore. Also look at what people say, I see some saying up to 1.5 is ok on this chip, however a lot of people get 4.2ghz @ 1.35v . I would personally see if you can get 4.1ghz running at 1.4volts. Try prime95 for stress testing, I find it fails when a lot of other stability testers pass.

MegaChief I'm suspicious of your RAM's stability with that overclock. Instead of running Aida64 try hyperPi or another more memory intensive test.

Is it just chrome? Can you open internet explorer and watch videos there without issue?

I ask because my quick google search for chrome+computer freeze turned up a comment thread saying that realtek audio drivers weren't playing well with chrome.

So if you can do those things in IE or Firefox we know that the issue is your realtek drivers and chrome.

If the other browsers cause a similar problem set your CPU back to stock settings and see if the issue persists.

If this solves the problem you should see if there are updates available for your realtek drivers.

If there are, install the updates and that ought to fix the issue.

My temps are 56-58c when i'm doing stress testing and when the ambient is colder 47-48c , idle temps 21-30. Also, when i'm gaming my cpu temp is 41c. I don't really know if i can increase the voltage according to those temperatures. I'll try lowering the cpu speed first like you said and i'll see how it goes.

It sounds like an unstable overclock, at default clocks he has no problem.

Ok ,I'll try with prime95, i don't know how safe is that program for AMD processors though.

It's fine, just watch temps while you run it. (At least until you know they stopped rising) This is a good idea for any stress testing.
Some don't consider an overclock stable until you can run prime95 for 24hours without restarts/errors. I personally run it for like 30mins to an hour, until I dial my overclock in. Then I see if it can run all night and if that is the case, I am happy.

I already tried what Martyr said and nope, the issue is still there. I tried lowering the cpu speed to 4,1 ghz and it keeps happening :/

I can now use chrome while the cpu is overclocked with no problems, but my pc freezes only when i enter to this website Bleachget.com and load a video, is it still system instability or is it something else?

Set it back to stock settings and try that website, if it's fine. It's the overclock.

I'm actually surprised no one asked about your Power supply and the rest of your specs. If I was to guess, it is either a low end unit or not enough power for what you are trying to do.

I doubt the difference in power draw from 1.33v (Stock) vs 1.4v is enough to push his PSU past it's limit. However, we should get all his specs.

My full pc specs are:

Cpu: Fx 8320 4,2ghz

Mobo: asus m5a97 r2.0

Gpu: r9 270x vapor-x overclocked

HDD: Western digital caviar blue 1000gb

Ram: kingston fury 8gb 1866 mhz

PSU: Antec VP630f 630w 80 plus

and i think that's it.

Solved!

I disabled LLC (load line calibration) and everything is fine now, is it okay if i disable that, right?
