Question PC freezes when launching games ?

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my PC that started about 1-2 months ago. Whenever I launch a game, my system freezes within 30 seconds. During the freeze, I can still move my mouse, but I'm unable to open anything, including Task Manager. I can hear the game sounds for a few more seconds, but eventually, they become distorted and stop as well.

Interestingly, this issue doesn't seem to occur when I play games like Valorant or Brawlhalla. However, it happens consistently with games like CS2, Rust, and other indie titles. Because of this, I suspect it might be related to my graphics setup.

I've already updated every driver I can think of, but the problem still persists. I'm not sure what's causing this, and it's really frustrating. Has anyone experienced something similar or has any idea what might be causing it? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

I've already updated every driver I can think of, but the problem still persists.
Please walk us through how you updated your drivers.

you would need to find the make & model;
whether by dissecting the system and finding a printed serial number,
model iteration printed on the PSU,
looking at manufacturer info online, etc...

this is a very important factor when troubleshooting a heavy processing failure.
Ram:2X8 ADATA
the make & model here can also be important.
was it a single 2x 8GB kit?

OS:WIN 11
is the OS freshly installed for this system,
and are games freshly installed or carried over on one of these drives?
Chassis:FRISBY
have you kept an eye on temperatures when trying to launch games and when the system is idling?

I have done a lot of research and found that my case is the Frisby FC-9310G.

My RAM is XPG Gammix D30 16 GB (2x8) 3200 MHz DDR4 CL16 AX4U32008G16A-DR30.

The OS is not freshly installed; it has been 2 months since I last formatted it. However, the issue might be related to the settings I configure after a fresh install.

About a month ago, my PC didn’t boot up and displayed a "CPU Overvoltage" error. When I checked the BIOS, it showed some crazy voltage levels, like 16V instead of 12V, and the CPU voltage was 2.7V instead of the usual 1.35V max. I set it to ignore the error so it could boot up, and I've been using it like that since then.

Additionally, I just changed my thermal paste, and the temperatures look fine now.

I'm not sure if this information is helpful, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The OS is not freshly installed
this should only be necessary if you had an old installation from a different motherboard.
running a health check on the OS;
DISM, etc should be all that's necessary if not.

if this is an old OS installation from a different motherboard than a fresh install is definitely necessary.
found that my case is the Frisby FC-9310G
and this info leads to the exact PSU make & model?

Sorry for the late response, but in the meantime, I formatted my PC using a flash drive (Rufus). However, the problem still occurs, specifically in GPU-based games. For example, when I try to play Minecr4ft with shaders, my PC goes into a BSOD within a minute. I also looked up my power supply model but couldn’t find anything, even though I checked behind the case. The only thing I know is that it came with the case, and the model of the case is Frisby FC-9310G.

From where are you sourcing all the drivers, especially graphics drivers?
"I have an RTX 3060 Ti, and I get drivers for it from the NVIDIA Beta app. I used to use GeForce Experience about a year ago, but now I use the NVIDIA Beta app for GPU drivers. For other drivers, like the AMD Ryzen 3600X chipset driver, I search the specific manufacturer's sites, such as AMD's Official Website."

Your driver sources are fine, with one exception - it's probably unwise to be using a Beta version of the Nvidia app. GeForce experience has always been suspect IMO and the app seems just to be GeForce Experience in an app. I would suggest you visit the Nvidia Driver Website and search manually for the latest driver (currently the latest game ready driver for you is 560.95, Aug 20 2024). I'd also suggest using DDU to fully uninstall whatever driver is currently installed before installing the latest driver you searched for manually.
