My Symptoms: My PC works perfectly when it is running. No crashes ever, no issues at all. Once every 3 or 4 times the PC goes to sleep, it wakes and then immediately freezes at the lock screen (not black screen, not blue screen) - I know it freezes at that moment since the clock shows current time. This also happens, but very rarely, when waking from monitors off, before sleep, and again just totally locked and frozen at the desktop, showing current time. I have duel monitors, and have tested this with each individual monitor, and was not able to replicate the issue in about 48 hours using the single monitor, so the issue appears limited to when I have both monitors plugged in.

I have done a great deal of reasearch, played with power settings (hybrid, hybernate, sleep, etc.), Intel Management engine settings, BIOS settings... nothing has solved the issue. I even went as far as building a new PC, issue persists.

In both setups, the drivers and firmware were 100% up to date. Both monitors are LG 27GL83A-B, connected via displayport.

My original PC with the issue was:

ASUS Maximus IX Hero (Z270)
7700K (stock clocks)
Gskil Trident Z CL14 2x16 3200
1080 Ti FE Samsung <-> GTX 1070 (loaned by buddy for testing)
960 Pro SSD (512 gb)
Seasonic Prime Titanium 750W

New PC is:

MSI MAG Tomahawk (Z490)
10600K (stock clocks)
Corsair Vengeance LPX CL16 2x8 (3200)
1080 Ti FE <- >GTX 1070 (loaned by buddy for testing)
WD Blue SN500 SSD (500 gb)
beQuiet! Silent Power 11 750W

I've asked for help on the issue in multiple places, I have yet to get even a response 🙁. I'd really appreciate some help.

Look in Reliability History and Event Viewer for error codes, warnings, or informational events that are captured just before or at the times of the wake up freezes.

Reliability History uses a timeline format. So you may be able to identify some pattern with respect to using a single monitor versus dual monitors.

Some errors/entries that appear everywhere except during that 48 hour time range when a single monitor was in use.

Thanks for the response - the only thing I see in Reliability History and Event Viewer is a Critical Event related to the system not being properly shut down.

I was having the exact same issue on a newly built computer, and was tearing my hair out. So far it looks like swapping out one of the 27GL83a for my Dell 2716DG has resolved it.

I had one LG and the Dell on the old computer - 8700k, Asrock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming K6, EVGA 1080, 32gb ram - and did not have the issue. I briefly had the new computer - 11700k Gigabyte Aorus Z590, Gigabyte 3080, 32gb of ram - with the mismatched monitors, and the problem occurred when I moved it to a different room and changed out one monitor. Extra annoying because I wanted two identical monitors so the color profile would be the same. 😑
