Im new to this site but this is one of my last resorts before i put a shotgun to my face. If i'm doing anything wrong, please inform me and ill fix/provide whatever information needed.

Computer Type: Laptop - Dell Inspiron i7559-7512GRY

GPU: GTX 960m, 4GB of VRAM, no overclock || Intel HD graphics 530

CPU: Intel 6700HQ, no overclock

Motherboard: Dell Inspiron 7559 BIOS 1.1.8

RAM: 16GB, no overlcok

Windows version: Windows 10

GPU Drivers: None at the moment as installing any nVIDIA drivers break my computer, apart from my intel graphics one.

Desc. of problem: After countless hours of reading old threads and googling these error codes, I haven't been able to determine what my issue is. All I could determine was that whenever I install any of nvidia drivers for my 960m, my laptop begins to either freeze or bsod. This problem started occurring after I went to work and came back, to see that windows updated something and basically caused this whole issue.

Troubleshooting: I've installed a new OS several times and EVERYTIME I install my nVIDIA drivers, my laptop either blue screens with the error code "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" or just simply freezes till i have to hard reset it. I've also ran diagnostic tests to make sure it is not a hardware problem. Lastly, I've ran DDU and uninstalled my GPU and tried installing the drivers both from nVIDIA and from my laptops manufacture site and the issue just arises again.

Can someone provide some insight?

What version of driver are you installing? Have you tried different versions? Was this on a fresh install of windows or just routine updating. Basically what prompted the issue? Did you reinstall OS because of a failure?

I've installed several different versions at this point. I've recently tried the newer driver 372.90. I've also tried the one thats listed on the manufacture site which is 368.71. I've tried a bunch of known stable ones as well with no success.

This problem is occurring on fresh installs of windows. I mean at first, my computer functionned properly and i could update my drivers with no issue. Keep in mind that this computer is about 1 month old. But one day i went to work, came back and was greeted by the advanced repair screen. So i'm assuming windows updated something and it broke stuff? But if that was the case, installing a new OS should fix it no? If so, thats not the case in my situation. Anyways, since i wasn't able to boot to my desktop at all -- I decided to install a new OS.

Laptops with Optimus graphics (Intel + nVidia video) and the AMD equivalent (I forget the name) can be tricky to set up right. In general, you cannot just grab the latest drivers off of nvidia's site and install them. Try downloading the nvidia and intel drivers from the laptop vendor's site.

With a few rare exceptions, the Intel integrated GPU actually controls the screen. The nVidia GPU acts like a co-processor, and sends rendered frames to the Intel GPU, which displays the frame on the screen. So updated Intel drivers need to be installed which recognize the nVidia drivers in order to get Optimus working right. If you install the Intel drivers first, it thinks your laptop only has an Intel GPU, and may not set itself up properly for nVidia drivers installed later, so try installing the Intel drivers second (or again). If you install Optimus-unaware nVidia drivers from the nVidia website, it tries to set things up so the nVidia GPU drives the screen. Except the nVidia GPU has no way to draw to the screen so you'll get blue screens and hardware errors.

Windows 10 has a Nvidia driver inbox, which is a lot earlier then that. Have you tried installing that way? Anything else banged in device manager?

Oh, speaking of Windows 10, it keeps trying to update my laptop to a newer version of the Intel video driver which causes the nVidia driver to crash every time I try to play a game on my laptop. I had to reinstall the Intel driver from my laptop manufacturer's website every time this happened to get it working again.

Previously, I had told Windows to not update this driver to prevent this from happening. That worked for about 2 months. But then Microsoft in their infinite wisdom turned the Windows 10 updates into an all-in-one update. So when I got the latest forced update, it included the newer but broken Intel video driver, and I had to reinstall the older driver again.

Windows 10 also has this nasty habit of installing a generic Microsoft driver when it can't find the manufacturer's driver, then removing the missing driver notification in device manager. It's made troubleshooting a major pain as I can no longer take a quick peek at device manager to see if any drivers are missing. I have to click through their properties one by one to figure out if it's using a manufacturer driver or a crappy less-functional Microsoft driver that's causing the problems the client is complaining about.

So while in theory Windows 10 makes driver installation and updating easier, in practice I've found it makes things more difficult.

I've just tried installing my nvidia drivers then following up with installing the intel ones, both from my manufacture site. But as soon as my computer reboots, I get the 'DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION' BSOD and i cant boot anymore till i remove the nvidia driver.

Yes, if i don't stop it from happening, windows will automatically download and install a 353.xx driver. I'm not quite sure, but the same results are produced in the end. Blue screen with the error code DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION.

I had the same problem and was LOSING MY MIND. Tried absolutely everything I could think of.

After several emails back and forth with the Nvidia support team, they advised me that a program that may be installed on my computer could be causing the drivers to fail. They told me to search for anything called "iDisplay", "Duet Display" or "Kairos Display". I eventually found something called "OBASE iDisplay" and uninstalled it. Restarted the computer and was able to install the 372.90 drivers without any issues.

Hope that helps!

Wait, are these programs you installed or were they installed by themselves by windows update/included in windows, etc?

I definitely did not install it intentionally. This was a 3rd party program installed at some point without my knowledge. Not sure when, where or how it was installed, but I searched my pc and found it. Uninstalled it, restarted and the latest Nvidia drivers were FINALLY able to install without issues.

Hi friend , i am facing same problem can you tell me the solution you found? i have same configuration and i have done exactly what you tried still i cant solve the issue . If possible some solution would be the biggest help i could use.

Just a follow-up (not sure if it'll help with OP's problem, probably not). The latest updates to the Intel and Nvidia drivers available via Windows 10 Update seem to recognize Optimus laptops. I no longer have to disable Windows Update to keep my Nvidia graphics working.

It's still a bit glitchy compared to the original manufacturer drivers. SweetFX throws an error and doesn't work (but the game still will). And occasionally I get an error the first time I run a game after rebooting, but the subsequent times work.
