PC Freezing After Power Outage

Specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte Z170-HD3

CPU: i5-6600k

Drives: 1TB HDD - general storage 250GB SSD - OS(win10 home) 500GB SSD - games

GPU: Gtx 1060 6GB - stock settings

PSU: EVGA 1000W 80 plus Gold

Backstory:

A few days ago we had a power outage and the power flickered off and on for about 2 minutes before being out for 4 hours. My Pc was plugged into a Tripplite surge protector (underkill I know but it was a quick option that was affordable)



Problem: I didn’t think anything of the outage since I thought I was protected but as I was in the middle of a Fortnite match (don’t judge) my screen froze and I heard almost like a power fluctuation noise in my headphones. A noise similar to what a forced shutdown sounds like if you have headphones on. The pc remains running and it won’t shutdown unless I hard reboot it, which still takes a longer than normal time of pressing the power button. Upon a very slow reboot, I can usually get back into the game for about 5-10 minutes before it happens again. The problem also happens if I’m just browsing the web, not necessarily doing graphics intensive activities.



Troubleshooting:

Memory check - nothing

Chkdsk and sfc - nothing

Windows event logs show nothing except an unexpected shutdown

Nothing in crashdumps I reverted back to a stable nvidia driver using DDU thinking maybe that was the issue but it’s still happening.

Note: my GPU is running at about 82c so that’s one possibility of an issue in my mind

I then went through and used a PSU tester to test each connection but nothing came of it until I plugged one of the 8 pins into the tester which proceeded to blow the tester and cause everything to be unresponsive. I switched the cables off that connection and rebooted. One odd thing was the system time was at March 22, 2022 so maybe the power fluctuation inadvertently reset the CMOS? Who knows. Everything was running fine and then 20 minutes into a game it happened again.



I’m lost as to what to test next. I’ve thought about doing a clean install of windows next but other than that with no logging to reference I’m kind of at a loss and getting frustrated. Just wanted to reach out and see if any of you might have some suggestions for me. I’m probably overlooking something obvious. Please let me know if you need more info and I will provide it as best I can.

use occt to stress test psu and if cmos show wrong time are you sure board did not get hit by power surge you might try another cmos battery in system and rest date and time .
