Question PC Freezing for 5-8 Minutes then WiFi Driver Goes Missing

Ever since mid-December 2023, my PC I built in July 2023, began having these stuttering freezes that lasted 5-8 minutes, with the PC chugging every 2 seconds and the audio as well. And when the stuttering stops, I see the RGB lights on my Keyboard, Mouse, and RAM sticks light up even though I turn them off by default, and finally the WiFi Driver is completely missing until I perform a Restart.

These freeze ups seem to happen in like, 1 in 3 PC sessions. There are entire days where there's no issues. Then on other days while on MS Edge or gaming, it suddenly freezes up.

I've tried DDUing my GPU and CPU chipset, reseating the GPU and RAM Sticks, updating my BIOS, using the default BIOS settings and default stock RAM settings (4800MHz instead of 5200Mhz), and more. I even checked the memory via MemTest and there weren't any reported issues.

The most recent solution i tried after the latest freeze-up was updating my WiFi and Ethernet drivers. As well as clearing out my MS Edge Cache + disabling Hardware Acceleration. The only other solutions I can think of is:

  • If it's AMD software related, either I wait for a software update fix later, or I rollback to the pre-December Adrenalin Software.
  • Getting an Anti-Virus software incase there's Malware?
  • I check the CPU to see if there's any bent pin. I just am hesitant to because the whole process was demanding (thermal paste, getting the hooks latched on)
  • Or worst case scenarios if all fails and this continues to be an issue months later, I reinstall Windows or have to buy new hardware.

I sometimes see people suggest PCs can suffer from CPU or GPU temp issues. I don't know how to report the temps (and it's strange it would only flare up despite no issue between July to Nov)

If anyone knows similar issues or solutions, I'd incredibly appreciate the help 🙂

updating my BIOS
For the sake of relevance, what BIOS version are you on at this moment of time? Did you clear the CMOS after you'd verified that the BIOS was successfully updated?

See if you can find another memory kit to drop onto your platform.

As for your drivers, source the drivers for your audio from MSI's support site(for the motherboard). Source the chipset and GPU drivers from AMD's support site. Use DDU to remove all GPU(Intel, Nvidia and AMD) drivers and Realtek drivers). Install all drivers in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

Where did you source the installer for the OS? You're advised to install the OS in offline mode.

Thanks, Lutfij.

There were no freezes yesterday since I updated the WiFi and Ethernet drivers but, it could strke today or tomorrow (seems to happen with 1 in 3 PC sessions).

re: BIOS

Currently it's 7D67v1E9(Beta version). Earlier i had it on 7D67v1A. But both suffered from the freezing issues.
No, i haven't cleared CMOS. I'll try to do that on the weekends (after work week over).

re: Memory Kit

Unfortunately I don't have any other Memory Kits. I might have to order another pair if I do.

For all the drivers, I use all the drivers straight from the MSI site: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-X670-P-WIFI/support#driver

I'll put a pin on using DDU for the RealTek drivers as well if the freezes return and be sure to use "Run as Admin"

For the OS, i directly got it off from MS. Downloaded the Windows 11 ISO on my old PC and installed it on the new desktop. I believe i had to do it offline because i couldnt connect to the apartment wifi

Problem Solved:

.... It all was because I apparently plugged my PC directly into the wall's socket rather than back into the Surge Protector 🤦‍♂️

It's been two weeks since I tried that and no freezing has happened since. I guess one day in December I decided to fix an unrelated issue and without much thought plugged the PC into the wall assuming nothing wrong would happen.

Sigh. Dumb me. But yes, apparently doing that caused voltage/power issues that led to instabilities aka Freezes.
