I built my PC September 2016, and around early-mid December of 2017 it's started randomly freezing/locking up/becoming unresponsive.
Specs: Windows 10 Pro 10.0.16299 x64
CPU: AMD FX-8370 8-core 4 GHz
RAM: 16gb Ripjaws
GPU: Radeon RX 470 8GB GDDR5
MOBO: Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750w 80+ Gold
Booting from a 250gb SSD w/ a 2TB HDD for storage
More info: The freezing happens in a variety of situations. The only two programs running every time are discord and chrome. There is nothing else consistent about it; it happens while gaming, while I'm just running discord and chrome with ~2 tabs open, it happens minutes after booting up or when my PC hasn't been shut down for over a week and I woke it up from sleep over 10 hours ago. If I'm in a discord call or listening to music, I've had sound cut out immediately and I've had sound for 2+ minutes after the rest of the PC becomes unresponsive. People sometimes can't hear me over voice chat anymore, sometimes they can.
By unresponsive I mean entirely: no mouse, no keyboard, no response to ctrl-alt-dlt or num lock or anything else. Can't pause videos or mute via keyboard hotkeys. I have to restart via tower in order to do anything.
What I've tried:
Updating drivers
Reverting back to previous versions of OS
Running memtest (came back fine)
Checking for any malware
Took PC apart and checked connections/cleared dust
Monitoring temps while running games, they're right around 70C which is where they've been since I built the PC.
I finally did a complete clean reinstall 3 days ago, hoping it was a software issue that would ultimately be fixed by essentially starting from scratch.
I'm now concerned it's either a corrupted system file of some sort, or it's a hardware issue. If it's a hardware issue I have no idea how I'll diagnose it myself because I don't have any other parts I can swap around. Plus it's so inconsistent and unpredictable, who knows? It just froze up today; prior to that, the last time it froze up was the 30th of March. The time before that was the 27th of March. And before that was the 13th of February (granted, it wasn't being used from the 14th of February through the 6th of March, but still). Sometimes the freezing episodes are 3 days apart, sometimes it's a couple of weeks. I have no idea at this point what I should be looking at to fix this and I'm really hoping y'all will have suggestions.
