My laptop has been acting up recently. It freezes sometimes when I play VR and yesterday it froze when I was trying to zip files. When it freezes, I can still move the mouse, but nothing is clickable and the task manager is frozen (numbers are frozen).

My laptop also randomly runs very slow sometimes, but sometimes it runs fine. I checked and it doesn’t appear to be doing any updates and task manager reports that cpu and memory usage is low.

Note that I am using an HDD with 16GB Intel Optane. I ran CrystalDiskBenchmark on my HDD and it reported that my drive was healthy.

Does anyone have any ideas short of a full system wipe?

Could be ram or overheating issues

Basic question, do you ever fully shutdown, no sleep or any otrher hybernation stuff?

may we have your full system specs?

First I would check the temps. HWInfo and Afterburner are two programs I use.

I do fully shutdown my laptop, but only at night. I do it to save the battery from being trickle charged and damaged.

Recently though, the freezes have required me to hard-reboot i.e. hold the power button down to kill power to my laptop, which I know is not good for the hard drive.

System Specs Pic:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y9uvq0FTCI324q33txmohvVN7ljnUajK/view?usp=sharing

Intel i7-8750H
1050 TI GPU
Sata 6 Gb/s 1TB HDD
16GB Intel Optane NVMe (Seems to be reporting 14GB though)
16GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM. (Seems to be running at 1333 MHz from pic)

HWInfo CPU Temp Pic (~50C at no load):

HWInfo Sensor Log .csv:

Thanks!

I would put a load on it with HWInfo running.
If you think it's going to freeze and require a hard reboot ....you can log the HWInfo data to a file...then when you reboot we can look at the temps and voltages right up to the freeze.

I can run it with VR when I get home from work tonight and post the temps, especially if it crashes.

Do you know if HWInfo continuously saves the data or will crashing prevent the data from being saved, since I cannot click the stop logging button?

My money is on the Hard Drive failing, sorry.

Also, HWinfo etc are not 100% accurate and not all laptops even have SMART enabled by default.!

Before you do any more testing, back up all of your important data, and then your less important data. If the HDD is failing, it will only get worse with extra use so be cautious until you know that it is/is not the HDD.

Good luck.

I backed up all my important data and back up my work data daily to the cloud.

Are there any other tests I can run or should I try the HWInfo test first?

I ran CrystalDiskBenchmark a month or so ago and it said the HDD was fine. I also ran windows disc check and it also said the HDD was fine.
