not really much difference between them, just go with which ever is cheaper. At 1440p I will leave it down too you the 970 will perform very well at 1440p but if you want to get 60fps then in some games you might need to drop down to high, the 980 should power through everything.

Me personally I would get the 970 and add another one in a couple of years or just upgrade too the next archecture which is pascal(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFSxj_Msc70 The new archeture looks amazing have a look at this video!).

For the MOBO if you want to OC the i7 past about 4.7 ghz or so you might think about it but it's a lot too spend for not much extra performance.

excellent build, I have some recommendations though.

What resolution are you playing at because maybe you would get the 970 instead as it's better price too performance and also the future proofing that the 980 brings is just dewarfed by next years GPU line up.

the i7 is unneccesary for the moment but I would stick with it as cpu's are much slower at making an impact in games so those extra threads in a couple of years will be making a difference and you won't need an upgrade for a long time.

I would only recommend getting this motherboard if you plan to do some serious overclocks, other wise I would get a cheaper Z97 board.

I'm going to presume you have another HDD but if you don't just a TB because it really does make a difference.

I really appreciate the feedback. I plan on gaming at 1440p, I currently have 1 ASUS PB278Q 27, I might add another at some point... or I might not. I do have a few internal HDs laying around as well so not needed. As for OCing, I do plan to OC, but I will not be super pushing the limits. Should I still forgo the ASUS MAXIMUS VII?
