PC gaming question

Hi,
I was just wondering as there are many different game clients on PC like Steam and GOG, what if I bought a game from say Steam and my friend bought one from GOG would we still be able to play together? If so how would it work? Surely I would have to invite them through Steam, but in this scenario I can't (because they bought it on GOG). I hope I have explained my question in a way that people will be able to understand :)
Thanks!

steam allows you to register your non-steam games with your steam client. if you friend created a steam account and then did this, you'd both be able to play together using the steam servers. otherwise i don't think you can since the server you are using is on steam which a non-steam account can't access.

now if the game maintains it's own servers independent of any of the game clients, then it should not matter where you got the game. everyone should be able to play together this way. you've just got to do some checking to see how the game in question handles servers and who/how one can connect to it.

but at least being able to tie a non steam game to your steam account should be a decent solution.
