PC Hangs on Motherboard Bios Screen After Reapplying Thermal Paste

Hello everyone. I was having some issues with thermals on my FX-6300 and because of this I spent the last hour disassembling my terribly complicated CPU cooler, reapplying the paste, and then putting it all back together. The first time I attempted to boot the PC after this it hung on the MOBO BIOS screen, though after I rebooted the PC it seemed to boot without issue.

What are the chances that I broke something on my MOBO when reassembling the PC? Could I have over-tightened the cooler and messed something up? I did hear a gentle almost "crunching" sound on my last screwdriver turn on the initial install. I loosened it on all four corners by about two screwdriver turns after this all occurred (the re-installation and subsequent boot up). It's one of those coolers where it has a special backplate.

I also changed my SATA cables around, just because I realized I had them in the last slots instead of the first ones.

If it boots fine, then don't worry about it. If you cracked the motherboard and it eventually fails, then consider it as an opportunity to upgrade.

Interesting. It would be possible to crack the motherboard and have it still boot up and function as if nothing was wrong even with the damage?

If it failed to boot only the first time and you did nothing to make it work, then there most likely was no damage when you heard the gentle noise that lead you to loosen the cooler. Then it probably hung because you changed the SATA port. Several members had to loosen a cooler for their system to boot; that doesn't necessarily imply there's a fine crack around the cooler (a motherboard is pretty sturdy). What cooler do you have?

I don't really know the model of the cooler. It's a cooler master cooler, sort of an old style. Nothing special without any heat pipes or anything like that. It has a special back plate it screws into without any standoffs or anything.
