His friend gave it to him as well, but he said that he was able to upgrade from windows 7 to 10 for free

Dude you don't have a legitimate operating system. An operating system just like every other part of the computer is something that must be purchased legally.

even if and it's a big if (since he was able to install windows 10 no problem) he got his OS with questionable means, it's still probably some other reason his system is slow. but again, define slow. go into control panel and program and feautures, see what kind of junk is in there.
uninstall things you don't need. (again, reinstall may solve the problem).

TL;DR Uninstall and define slow.

You can recreate the Windows installer through Microsoft's website for free (if you have a valid licence). Be sure in the future you only get your software from the source or a reputable retailer to insure your own safety.

Probably some screen recorder that casts his screen over the Internet to some criminal organization just looking for credit card inputs. I'm serious now. Why would anybody want to create an illegal, free OS for people to use? Out of the kindness of their hearts? Of course not! Never make assumptions about the heart. They do it because they tie stuff in there for their own benefit. It's like when people buy street drugs and they're tied with other stuff versus the legally obtained drugs (I certainly do not speak from experience on this one; either for that matter).

That wouldn't be it though, because whenever i run programs offline my pc is still slow?

I don't know, but really Toms is pretty straightforward about making sure people have a legal OS before helping with further assistance. It's for your own benefit really. You don't need to listen to me at all, you can use it, perhaps it's not the problem, but that's just my cent. If the others on this thread want to go through further troubleshooting then they may.
