PC is slowing up WHY?..eg open Wordpad taked about 60 seconds to open

Got plenty of ram - well 4GB, defrag is ok have deleted all browsing history temporary files etc, plenty of hard drive space, have done full virus scan with AVG etc but things just seem to be getting slower and slower..eg click to open simple program Wordpad takes between 30 and 60 seconds!
One piece of info may be relevent?..there are 5 of us users who use the pc (not at the same time of course).
Any help/pointers to get to the bottom of things would be gratefully received,

are you signing off when switching users? or just switching?

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+ESC) to see what processes are running. It is likely you have something running in the background that is causing the delay - it could be anything from your anti-virus program to Windows Indexing. Look for those consuming a lot of resources, then google their names to see what they are. After disable those that you don't want running.
