PC is so slow that it's unusable

So here's the situation: Yesterday I was on my computer and suddenly it started to lock up. So naturally I attempted to shutdown and restart it because that usually fixes it. But the computer did not shutdown successfully because it was on the "Shutting Down" screen for almost an hour.

I then cut the power at the source then proceeded to restart it from there. Then once I logged in I found myself not being able to do anything because the computer would either take excessive amounts of time to do simple things like drag an icon across the screen or open applications. And I should mention this is a really good pc so it should not be acting this way.

So I've done all I know how to do which is: I've ran memtest86, no errors were found. I've scanned my system twice with my anti-virus software and no malicious software was detected. And I've deleted several games/apps from the memory and disabled several start-up programs and none of this seems to help.

So what could possibly be wrong?

Did you use msconfig to disable the programs from startup? If not, try running msconfig and look for suspicious programs in startup and processes. Before disabling anything make sure it is safe to do so. You could also try something like CCleaner to remove any lingering temporary files that may be clogging the system (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download).

Yes i used msconfig to do the disabling. and i did use CCleaner in safe mode then tried to start windows normally after that but its still the same

I'm not sure CCleaner runs the same in Safe Mode but I could be wrong. I'm not sure this will help as you may have already tried it but have you run any diagnostics on the disk to check for errors? It really does sound like something is running in the background. Can you look to see what is running via Task Manager after booting Windows normally?

The two I would seriously take a look at are avp.exe and cltmng.exe. The second one comes as a part of some installers and when not unchecked it will automatically install along with the program you want to install. I have done this before by carelessly clicking yes to everything only to find that Chrome had be hijacked by Conduit Search.

Evidently avp.exe relates Kaspersky Anti-virus software. There is a know issue with it causing high CPU usage:

nvtray.exe is related to NVIDIA Settings and probably could be safely disabled with MSCONFIG. You could try disabling it and see if it makes a difference in performance.

well I did a disk check and had windows "scan for and attempt to recover bad sectors" and today it is working fine so far but it's too soon to tell.. so the disk check might have fixed it. if it works fine the rest of the day i'll assume my problem is resolved. and i'll be sure to get rid of that cltmng.exe

Slow systems start-ups happen because of many reasons like excess data, less free memory, unused start up programs/ applications, bad hard drive issues, virus issues etc. So now when your computer is working fine, try to remove every unused item (data, start-up programs, applications) and replace heavy security tools (as it takes more time and space, hence make your PC slow) with lighter one. Like for an antivirus, you can go for Immunet Plus, Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky etc. Clean computer’s registry, and defrag the fragmented memory space. Perform advance and complete system scan, so that any possible virus/spyware/malware threat will be removed and your pc will work fine. Hope this helps.
