PC isn't powering on

Hi, I installed a new pc for a friend of mine and it wouldn't start. Although I have basic knowledge in PCs and installing the necessary parts\wiring needed to make the PC functional, I have installed a couple of PCs before this one and worked fine. Now I'm confused with this one.

- When I turn on the PC the fans (cpu\gpu) slightly move and then stop. My guess is that the system for some reason isn't receiving any power. I have also tried using a different PSU (ZALMAN 850 watts) and I still got the same result.

Any tips you guys could provide would be very helpful. Here's a screenshot in case if there's something I'm doing wrong.

P.S. My PSU is Cooler master 500 watts.
CPU intel I5 2300 2.8GHz 6mb cache LGA1155,
GPU Asus 6570 DDR3 1gb
Mobo ASUS P8P67 (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67
RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600

8 pin EATX12V connector on your motherboard. Your manual states you can use either 4 or 8. Kind of unclear. You could try using the 8 pin connector. But I guess it shouldn't be necessary with a i5.

EDIT - Double check all connections. You already swapped PSUs and had the same issue. You could disconnect everything except for one stick of RAM, CPU, GPU and try to boot. If still nothing, you could check and reapply the thermal compound under the CPU heat sink.

I have seen a similar problem like yours. That system has a bad mobo. And I also had a similar problem in my system for my PSU. few months ago. Fan spin up and stop like yours. Better you check mobo/ psu again separately. Try using 8 pin connector as skaz mention.

Yeah, dead motherboards are the worst. I keep meaning to get one of those PCI mobo testers. Would make troubleshooting faulty motherboards so much easier.

I forgot to mention, if you happen to have a 4 pin motherboard speaker (aka system warning speaker) I would hook that up immediately and listen for the beep codes.

EDIT: Your BIOS beep codes can be found in section 2.4 of your motherboard manual.

could be anything with that symptom. First thing to do is disconnect any unnecessary components, like HDD, DVDrom, front panel USB Ports (very common for these to short out giving no power), vi card. Basically get it to a bare minimum config with only the power button connected just to see if it will power on. ANY failed component can cause a pc not to power on.

Thanks guys for the quick response. Thankfully I found out after what you said that one of the case's wires is faulty, which was preventing the other components from getting any power. The PSU appears to be broken as well, I guess I'll have to replace that.

A PSU can be relatively inexpensive, and depending on the particular front panel wiring that is faulty, that can be dealt with. It's a bummer, but it certainly could've been worse.

Yep, could have been mobo or CPU or both!
