PC isn't turning on. Is my motherboard dead?

I've had a custom built PC for almost two years but the other day it stopped working. At first, the CPU and GPU fans would spin but only if I hold the power button. After that it stopped turning on at all. I pulled out the PSU and connected the green wire from the ATX connector to a black wire and the PSU turned on without a hitch. I haven't tested each pin separately for current, though. I also used another power button but without any effect. Is my motherboard dead? My warranty expires on 30th January and I may have a chance to give it for repair before that.

it is possible but it is also just as likely your PSu died. Using the jumper method you used to tested helps rule it out but it isn't 100% either. You have a spare supply around to try?

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare PSU lying around.
