PC keeps rebooting

I installed Norton System Works and Go Back. To finish installation you need
to reboot, so I removed the disk. A message said it needed the disk & to
insert it and click retry so I did. Now the PC won't boot up. It starts to
boot & goes thru the Go Back screen but then it just repeats the process over
and over. Using Go Back doesn't work because the only available time to set
it too is when the problem started. F8 doesn't work either, no matter which
option I try (safe mode, last known good config., etc.) it still goes thru
the process over and over. Using the XP cd to repair doesn't work either, the
text is too far to the left to read it all but it did say ok to boot from cd
but it won't. Anyone know what else I can try or do I just need to reformat &
start over?

Installing anything from Norton was a big mistake IMHO!
Many times there are manual screen position controls on the monitor to get
the text back into the viewable area.
Is your BIOS set to boot from CD first?
Moist times, the screen will say...press a key to boot from CD, if you don't
press a key, it will boot from the next device on the list.
If you can't get the reinstall to work; you don't have much choice.

Yeah and mine, its the cause of more PC disasters than anything else I
deal with. I hate it.

I agree if you are talking about Norton Internet Security, but the stand
alone Antivirus product is very stable on most systems.

Stable - Perhaps, Effective ?,
Customer had Dell Notebook - Uninstalled 2004 NAV (updated)
& replaced with eTrust 7.0. Full scan revealed 7 viral infections.

I disabled Norton Go Back and everything is fine. We have been using Norton
for more than 6 years and the only other problem we've had is it slows down
the boot process.

Not 2005 its a nightmare in all its guises. NIS is just horrible these
days I could write a post for a year and not cover all the pooters I
have had to remove NIS2004/5 from and why. I believe the Corporate
Version is pretty good but I won't risk trying it. NOD 32 / Kerio
Evangelist me. Used to use Norton 2003 Personal Firewall behind a NAT
router, that was fine.

Even with the stand alone AVversion I have had loads of PCs plagued by
constant "update" downloading and not installing so looping over and
over.

Its rubbish IMO last reasonable version was 2003 since then it has
become a bloated mess.
