I can be doing the simplest of tasks and my PC just turns off randomly... no shutdown sequence or anything the PC just turns straight off and all monitors go black. I have no idea what is causing it which is why I am coming here. This has happened 3 times in the past 2 days and I'm getting quite worried. Running temps it doesn't seem like anything is wrong with CPU or GPU, I've heard that the power supply can be the problem, I've had mine for a few years and it's a corsair VS550 but the fan seems to be running fine and seems quite cool.

If anyone can answer what this could be I'd be really grateful, thanks.

Solution
Temp throttling will not cause sudden power downs.

"I've heard that the power supply can be the problem."
Yes, that's my first suspect.

"corsair VS550 but the fan seems to be running fine and seems quite cool"
A heat issue on the power supply is almost never the cause but that doesn't mean the power supply has no issues.

I recommend you try a different power supply.

Okay, are you completely sure about that? I did look in windows log and it showed up as it being a power problem. I guess it could be PSU but I don't want to buy one just to find out it might not be that. If I do buy another one, what one should I get? not too expensive xD

Yes, I'm sure that's my first suspect.
Why?
Because, when a computer crashes from the majority of issues it dumps the ram and saves crash information.
But it sounds like your not getting a shutdown or bluescreen or anything just sudden power off so.. yes, my first suspect is your power supply
BUT....
I say suspect because there isn't really a good way to know for certain.
You could buy a power supply tester (I have one) they are cheap and it can help you decide if you think the power supply is working or if you should try a motherboard.

Installing a new PSU now, and going to do a fresh install of Windows. I'll let you know how it goes. In the case that it isn't the power supply, what else could it be?
