Hey! I was unsure where to post this so I went with Components, since it seems like the most general category. Please move the post if it doesn't belong here.

My issue is this:

I replaced my old sound card with Creative Sound Blaster Z because of the old one being broken.

Through this sound card I have my Astro A40 headset with mixamp connected. It is connected through an optical cable in order to get the 7.1 surround function of the headset working. This is activated through dolby digital live through the sound blaster software.

A few day after I installed the card I started noticing some crackling noises appearing every 3 or so seconds. Sometimes the sound completely dropped out for like 2-3 seconds, then came back only to continue crackling. The only thing that fixed this was restarting my computer, but then it came back again a few hours later, even days later. The sound can be compared to the sound that comes from a needle touching a LP plate.

I've been in contact with Creative Support and I've done all they've suggested, but nothing helped. They suggested running a patch file that modified my registry, disable the onboard sound through BIOS, and move the card to a different PCI-E slot, but nothing helped.

Today I noticed that there was onscreen lag together with the crackling, so I'm beginning to suspect that it is not the sound card that is the issue. I've ran a stress test with my CPU (prime95) to see if there is any issues, but nothing.

Reactivating Dolby Digital Live also removes the issue for a short while (10-30 minutes) before it comes back.

I've ran CCleaner, anti-virus (BitDefender Total Security 2015), and dpclat to see if there is any issues there. Nothing helped.

The temperatures of all my components are completely fine. Not perfect, but OK.

I'm really at a loss for what to do here. I cannot find the source of the problem.

Here is a dropbox link with a .txt file of all my PC specs, generated with Speccy

Hopefully someone can help me here. I'm really tired of this issue :/

Thanks!

I had a similar issue (crackling) with sound blaster cards - my only fix was to change the audio mode to 'creation' in the SB control panel. I haven't used SB in a while as I switched to a USB DAC, so i'm a little fuzzy as to exactly where the setting was - but it was in one of the Creative apps.

Thanks for your reply!

Hmm, I cannot find this "Creation" setting anywhere. Looked through all the tabs for the Sound Blaster software, but I can't see it.

Yeah, I think that this setting is removed, because I cannot find it anywhere in the software I have.

Might be worth noting that I have played around with every possible setting in the software to see if it helps, but it doesn't. Switching to a different sound card, like my mixamp that is connected through a USB cable does help, but then I loose my 7.1 surround sound and that kinda defeats the purpose.

I do not have this app. It's either discontinued or not supported by my soundcard.

Thanks for your suggestions though :)

Anyone else got any suggestions?
