Hey guys,

I've had my PC for a while now, but only recently it has started to lag on everything. I unplugged it for a while and plugged it back in around 2 weeks later and since then my PC has lagged on everything. It will lag on google, CSGO, general windows operation, pretty much everything. There is often a typing delay and programs can take forever to open or just freeze and crash. There are periods where there is less lag but even during these periods my PC will lag if I launch a game or program.

My PC specs are:

CPU: i7 4770k

GPU: 780Ti

HDD: 2TB seagate drive (it is by far the cheapest part of my pc and has always been slow, not sure if this could be part of the problem.

PSU: Corsair 750w bronze

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87-HD3

RAM: 16GB DDR3 Gskill Ripjawz 2100mhz

I did a reset the other day, but it only resulted in me losing most of my files, the lag has still persisted.

Please help

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes while unplugging your computer and not using it for awhile (I was recently gone on vacation for 3 weeks) there are updates that need to be done as well as anti-virus scans that do a periodic scan. I feel like your issue is more software than hardware. As your HDD is in the cheapest part in the build does not mean that's the case.

When I ever get back from being away for a little while I spend some time updating my things. I read that you reset your PC, that could be a potential virus. I'd do a virus scan with MalwareBytes & SuperAntiSpyware for the time being. Sometimes viruses or just malware can cause lag among all programs and functions.

I hope this helps in some way.

Thanks, I ended up taking apart the PC to find that the cpu had barely any thermal paste left on it. I ran some temperature checks and then determined it was the cpu causing these issues as it was constantly running at 90-100 degrees celsius. Once I replaced the thermal paste the lag disappeared.
