PC locking up / turning off screen during high intensity gaming.

Hey guys,

I've been having a lot of trouble with my build for a long time (couple years). Some games cause my monitor and audio to go turn off. After a couple seconds of silence I resume hearing the game audio in the background but the screen does not come back on and the computer appears to be locked up. Usually the games that cause this are the most graphically intensive ones. I know there's about a million questions like this on the forum, but I've swapped out my PSU and GPU and I still have this problem.

Specs:

i7 3930K (even at stock)

Asus Rampage Extreme IV

SLI GTX 780ti

Corsair RM1000 PSU

I'm just not sure what to blame it on at this point. My CPU is not overheating, I've checked the temps. After it happens it seems that the GPUs go into overdrive and the fans spin faster than usual. Do you think it's time to swap out for a new motherboard? I know it's usually the PSU but after changing it up to 1000w it doesn't seem to be the case. I've tried running single GPU and it still happens. Right now it happens at a specific part of the Black Ops 3 campaign. I played about 2 hours until this point flawlessly. Another game that has caused it was H1Z1.

Today I did a clean reset of my Windows 10 installation, but to no avail. I would love to have this solved before Fallout comes out 😉

Thanks!

I had a similar issue a few days ago, but you may have tried what fixed my problem. I just pulled out the RAM for a minute and viola! It was fixed for me. If you haven't tried that, then I would say give it a shot. If that doesn't help, and you have ruled out other hardware being an issue, then I would say it's your board.

Actually I did just swap their spots yesterday in an attempt to solve it. I also ran windows memory diagnostics which came up with nothing 🙁

Appreciate the reply though!

Hey semogen,

Does your case have good ventilation? I know the reference cards are different, but my GTX 780ti's have the aftermarket coolers that exhaust the heat back into the case. Before I sorted out my ventilation issues these cards were making the plexy on the side of the case hot, but my CPU temps never went over 55c on my X99 platform.

If you have the ability to check the temps on other areas of the mobo see what they show up as. It could be another area is getting a little toasty.

I know you said you just did a clean install of windows, but just to be that guy I will go ahead and ask if all of your drivers were up to date. I have experienced odd issues with outdated drivers in the past.

Hope this helps you out, and good luck!
