With the annoucment of Microsofts new Windows 11 adding Direct Storage and Auto HDR are we really getting closer to Becoming as comprable to a console?

Granted there will Always be one big benifet to a Console, the Devs can design games specificly to that hardware/software and test it and will "typically" less issues due to the fact that there are less varrents in Hardware/Software. To add to this now a days you have bluetooth controllers that can Connect directly to your PC. I personally have have a Xbox Series X controller witch I use on my PC to play some games, Yes some games You just have to have a controller to play a game Like NBA 2K21. I was a Console gamer when I was younger, But I just can't justify shelling out crazy amounts of money for a product that changes every 5/10 years or what ever incroments they come out (I don't keep up any more).

I did not spend a Crazy amount of money for a Rig (around 2.2k for my current system witch is a bit over a year old) with Just one step down on both my CPU and Video Card that is at the time I bought it. With that said If some one spends 5k+ on a system and now With window's 11 coming out with a few features that will seamingly Greatly improve the PC gaming exsperince Is PC Gaming ready to be as good or maybe better then Console Gaming?

I've always thought this idea that PC needs to catch up to console is a lot of BS. You would think that the fact that consoles didn't even get x86 architecture until a couple gens ago, if anything would make the reverse true.

can you clarify that for me, x86 is a 32-bit processor where x64 is 64-bit processor? The consoles didn't have 32-bit processing? or is that the reverse?

The choice of using x86 was because Sony realized that making custom CPUs that developers hated working on and ultimately went nowhere wasn't going to work for PlayStation anymore and Microsoft simply mooched off of what Sony did.

x86 is used generically to refer to the x86 family in general. Because if we were being technical here, IA-32 is the actual 32-bit instruction set. x86 strictly refers to the original 16-bit instruction set.

Overall the whole "PC Master Race" vs "Console peasants" argument is a dumb construct based off a video that people took way too seriously to justify spending gobbles of money on something and couldn't stand the fact that people who bought "lesser" machines were happy.

I'm familiar with the x64 and x86, just the way he stated it seemed a bit off. As far as an argument goes, though I did phrase the title with a very old argument the discussion/goal is really aimed more toward Are PC's actually going to be as comparable as a Console. Like I stated though I'm a PC gamer and I find the idea of buying a console that only does one thing and is not upgradeable disturbing I do willingly admit there are many things better About playing on a console vs a PC.

Now with windows 11 coming and some of the nice things Xbox and Sony have added coming to the PC Direct Storage and Auto HDR not to mention better controller avliablity for PC's and accessories, I think PCs are becoming closer to being just as good as a Console.

Nothing "off" about reminding gamers consoles have been slow to catch up tp PC regarding chip architecture. I really don't get why so many people rave about the latest consoles. You're still stuck with a control device that sucks for shooters, and many say even some exclusives run at poor performance levels. I doubt I'll ever buy a console. Furthermore, we're having record 100+ degree heat where I live right now, and it's so unusual that most here don't have AC, yet my gaming PC, as speced in my sig, is handling it easily (with a single 120mm fan air cooler no less). I would never use a console in such heat, then again, I would never use a console. 😆

The first Xbox had a x86 CPU in it.
They are just doing whatever makes the most sense for them and MS is all about getting people tied to their platform and matching the hardware so that porting over all the games is as easy as possible is just part of that.

When has a PC not been better than the consoles?! Was there even any game released yet on the consoles that has direct storage? I would think that we would have had a bunch of articles here about it if that had happened.
Also direct storage will not make your CPU/GPU any faster.

Yeah, that's the problem with a discussion like this: it makes an argument that nobody can really engage because it doesn't give anybody any definitions or parameters used when comparison. It's hard to ask "when will X be as good as Y" if the people you're asking tend to already believe X is better than Y. Especially when it's a value judgment on two things that have different uses.

The thesis is given no backing, so it's useless disagreeing. I might as well say "when will tacos be as good as lawn mowers?"

I suppose, but given the fact that Console is very specific and easier to build games for because there are fewer variants and some features like the new Direct Storage as much as I love PC gaming consoles have had an edge on PC gaming even for those with "BEEFY" computers (which I would consider mine to be now as I just built it a year or so ago)

So sure there are people whose heads are stuck in the sand and think what they are going to think. If you look at it logically You can have a discussion that brings opinons based on the Giving Info out there.

On the console side, Like I said before your Big benefit was that there was not a lot of variants, you had Hardware and Software that is universal So its easier to have a game that works on better VS a PC that has so many different variants I couldn't begin to tell you what the possible combinations are, But as Tech gets better and better Do those changes really come at a cost for PCs anymore?

Yeah that's not true.
The benefit that the consoles had and have is that the developers can choose the quality settings that the console can handle, that doesn't make the consoles better it just makes them easier to use because you don't have to do any adjusting to get whatever FPS the devs thought would be ok.
There have been a lot of reviews that have shown that the quality settings on console games are very low compared to what is tested on PC.
If you dial in the settings of the consoles you can match the performance with a pretty lowish end system.

Comparing consoles to computers is ridiculous. Consoles have one configuration. That's it. Computers have millions of different configurations and performance. Is the Xbox Series X better than a $400 starter desktop from HP that doesn't even have a dedicated GPU? Absolutely. Is it better than my $3,500 workstation? Absolutely not. The price point of game comparisons is stupid as well. Saying that a single GPU costs more than an entire Xbox is true, but is ignoring the fact that the PC market has been strangled by crypto mining, as well as the Xbox being sold at a financial loss because the games, subscriptions, and other services are what bring the real money in.

I have a pc with a RTX 3080 and a Series X. The PC is significantly superior in image quality and FPS, also there are very few Series X games that support keyboard & mouse. The 2 features mentioned in the OP are minor in my view. Direct Storage does look good and the XBox equivalent is a nice feature but it’s fairly small in the whole console experience, also with an SSD pc game loads are very quick anyway. Auto HDR is fixing a problem that Win 10 has switching between HDR and non HDR apps but I can still game using HDR on the pc.

I think the Series X is very impressive for its price but in my opinion it’s already behind pc overall.

Of course. But my sentiments for Microsoft mooching off of Sony was because they did it for the Xbox 360's CPU (tbf, IBM approached them with a PPE when Microsoft asked for something) and while it's up in the air who asked AMD first, I'm willing to bet Sony asked AMD to make them something first and Microsoft was simply presented with something similar when they asked for a CPU.
