Ok guy so first of all, thanks for all of your postings and information, they were a huge source of research when building my 13 year old son's first gaming PC. Now that it is built, we noticed one issue, and it seems to be a very common one for what I can gather looking through my Google searches, but all with no real fix. His mic level is very low, 1. I have checked and max all mic levels both in the Windows recording Devices setting and in the Realtek Audio Manager software. 2. I have check multiple recording peripherals (analog; 3.5mm jacks) like a couple of headsets, and a stand alone mic and both came up with the same results. The only peripheral that works very well its the c920 (I think that's right) Logitech Webcam, which is an excellent cam if I may add, but of course this an USB based input and it bypasses the on-board audio in the mobo. Lastly 3. I have used the same headsets and mic in my own M17X3 laptop and they work perfectly. So my guess it has something to do with his setup. He is running W7 with a ASRock Killer Fatal1ty z97 mobo. I tried both front and rear mic jacks also. So my questions are:

1. Will a separate sound card help with this?
2. Should we move to USB based headsets?
3. Or do you guys have a quick fix that perhaps I've overlooked?

Thank you all for taking the time, and apologies for the long post, bu I wanted to make sure you had as much info as possible. Thank you in advance again.

Solution
yes a separate sound card could help with this issue an external usb one should work just fine can pick these up for $5-$10, USB headsets usually come with inbult sound cards so this will also work, I had an issue with my headset while I had speakers to fix this I uninstalled the Audio drivers and left both headset and speakers plugged in then reinstalled the drivers then everything worked fine, im unsure as to why this happened it just did, so maybe try this first? if it doesn't work either of your suggestions should work just fine.

I have not tried the driver thing while mic and speakers are plugged in. i will try that first, and see if that helps. Thanks

first and foremost the mic has to be placed along the jaw line right below the corners of the mouth. what might work for an adult or one person does not work for the next or a child. can't tell you how many tims i've forgotten to lower my mic boom and people have told me it sounds like i have my head up my arse when i try to talk.
check mark the mic boost in windows audio RECORDING ( not playback) &/or the software being used to record speak thru such as ventrillo or team speak or yahoo voice chat, skype or what ever is being used.

lack of system specs and hardware leaves only guesses at what is going on.

The control test have been done by myself only, not my kid. As stated before, the devices works fine with my laptop but not on his PC. Also as stated, all levels have been maxed, checked, double check, and tripple checked. Aside from the motherboard model, and OS, what else would you like me to further elaborate? I don't think the headsets model should matter since I'm sure it is not the problem since it works like a charm in my computer and my wife's as well. But if you need it, is the Scroll H5GX, which works awesome in my system, very nice mic level for the price. Thanks for the response, let me know if you need more info.

So the issue was the driver. ASRock Realtek Motherboard Soundevice was making the mic level low. I rolled back the driver to Window's default and that worked like a charm. I tried to re-install the driver just in case but nothing. Rolled it back, and mic level is now good.
