Hey Experts,

So my PC has finally come to the point where I am realizing it needs a good revising and perhaps upgrade. But I dont want to just throw stuff at it without first asking some experts on whats compatible and what you would reccomend!

My Current Build is:

Intel i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 4 Core(s)
Ram 32 GB DDR3
Motherobard; MSI Z87 - G45 Gaming (MS-7821)
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB
Seagate 1TB HDD
External SSD Samsung 1TB
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 Ti

Budget around £500/£750

Basically this build has been running games absolutely fine, can most of the time run all high end as well but recently a few games have been stuttering on it and all in all not running as smooth. The big one for me was the recent release of Ark Survival Ascended!!! Of course game is running pretty bad for most but for me I looked into my build and decided i could definitely do better my end!!

So question is, what would you recommend to update and make it all compatible?

Any replies and answers or general knowledge drops will be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks
Nomad

You may've already worked this out for yourself, but basically you need a whole new build. Your old system is limited in what can be upgraded, and any improvements would be tiny, much better upgrade and sell off what you don't need anymore.

You can keep your drives, but I would suggest getting a NVME (M.2) boot drive. Depending on your case and PSU, maybe keep those too (although PSU's tend to degrade with age)....can you add these to your current component list.

I'm sure we can put together an ok build, just need to know what components we are keeping and what needs replacing, and if you can stretch your budget...you could get a bit extra by selling your old components, especially the GTX 1050ti.

AM5 has high upfront cost, So suggesting this as alternative:

You can upgrade to i7-14700 later on with bios update

6750XT for smooth 108p gaming for some years to come

ATX 3.0 psu with 16 pin connector for future gpu upgrades

You can find LGA 1700 mounting kit for your existing cooler for 5 quid.

Alrighty. Thankyou for the replies to both of you.

So below is my full build and what i would like to keep as it would inevitably save money for me.

Case = Gaming HAF X
Motherboard = MSI Z87 - G45 Gaming (MS-7821)
Intel i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 4 Core(s)
Ram 32 GB DDR3
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB
Seagate 1TB HDD
External SSD Samsung 1TB
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 Ti
PSU Corsair RM750x

So obviously the 2 SSD's and HDD can stay
The case should be large enough so can stay
would the power supply also be enough?
and im guessign the ram is not able to stay?

Man thanks again for the time taken to help me out, really appreciate it.

Oh also Budget I'll say £800 and also what's the best way to go about getting some money for parts like my old GPU now?

Depends on how old the PSU is. the RMx typically come with a 10 year warranty. If its 9 years or more, i would suggest getting a new one.

Regarding the GPU, i guess list it in eBay? along with the mobo, ram and CPU. if you still have the stock intel cooler, even better. The CPU, mobo ram and GPU combo should net you 120 quid minimum.

Hey everyone,

I got a budget of £800 but I dont need everthing.

I am upgrading completely from my old PC Gaming Setup but I am able to keep some of my current pieces. I have a Haf X Tower Case, plenty of SSD and HDD Storage, PSU still new at 750W and all the peripherals (monitors, keyboard mouse ect)

I'm looking to put together the gaps with something that could happily run high spec games but within the budget. One game in mind recently that made me realize my PC set up was coming to its end was the Ark Survival Ascended release (Game is poorly optimised but even on low settings my pc is coughing)

This is my Current Build as an idea of what i have had for a long while now
Case = Gaming HAF X
Motherboard = MSI Z87 - G45 Gaming (MS-7821)
Intel i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 4 Core(s)
Ram 32 GB DDR3
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB
Seagate 1TB HDD
External SSD Samsung 1TB
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 Ti
PSU Corsair RM750x

As you can see the CPU alone is I think 10 years old!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Many Thanks

Stuttering is caused by a temporary lack of a critical resource.
Usually cpu.
Take the time to
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.
If you need a cpu upgrade, you need a platform upgrade.
The ark survival reccomendations:
Minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10/11 with updates
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6800K
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 1080
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 70 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD Required

Recommended system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10/11 with updates
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, Intel i5-10600K
  • Memory: 32 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6800, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 70 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD Required

The processor requirements list older and somewhat obsolete parts.
On the intel side which you will be more familiar with, the I7-6800K is almost comparable to a $100 I3-12100.
That is only a modest boost over your I7-4770K.
The recommended processor listed , the I5-10600k is really not very different.
My thought would be a I5-13400 for about $210.
These processors come with an adequate lga1700 cooler.
You would need a lga1700 motherboard.
Most any will do. Avoid the cheapest H10 based units.
You can find a 760 based motherboard for <$100.
DDR4 and DDR5 ram performance is similar.
The difference in pricing for a ram/mobo combo has been reduced to the point where you might as well buy a DDR5 based system.
2 x 16gb ram will be about $90.

Plan on reusing your ssd devices.
Even for the C drive.
The value of pcie m.2 ssd's is fast sequential processing.
Most work is small random work.
You will not be able to tell any difference.
These experts could not tell any difference:

Repurpose your HDD as external backup.

IF your test suggests that the 4770 can live a bit longer, then look at graphics cards.
Your RMx750w psu is a good one and I would not worry about reusing it.
Tom's gpu hierarchy chart can give you a relative capability of different graphics cards.
There is a big gap between the minimum and recommended graphics cards.
My guess is that something in between would be an appropriate target.
4060., A770 or RX6700 perhaps.

Amazing reply thank you so much for taking the time to give me all this info.
After reading through it sounds like your saying I could survive a little longer with my set up with just going for a new Gpu perhaps?? Or was it also a case of changing up the Cpu?

I did a small test on the game and saw that both my CPU and GPU were under " Very High Usage" From high to low Graphics settings my FPS didn't change the slightest!

This shows that it's your CPU which is holding your system back, adding a better GPU will do nothing to help. As for a CPU upgrade, the only better CPU is the 4790K, but you're only talking 5% improvement over your 4770K, so not worth it.
You need a new system, the only question is AMD or Intel? I went with AMD myself as the new AM5 socket will be supported through the next few generations of CPUs, so can be upgraded, where as Intel are on the final CPU for their current socket, so no future upgrade options.

I thought as much!!
Well tbh I appreciate the advice but I am a Intel Gamer!! So I'd rather stick with Intel haha. No true explanation as to why but there we go. If you got any builds you would reeccomend with Intel in mind i would greatly appreciate it thankyou already for the help

For an Intel gaming build in your price range, I'd look at the i5-13400F.

Actually, there is already an Intel build suggested above with the 12400F, I assume this is to keep it within your budget, but it includes a new PSU, which I don't think you need. All I'd change on it is the CPU to 13th gen and maybe slightly faster RAM, you really want DDR4 3600 CL 16. Keep your current PSU, as it's still within it's warranty period, so should be good for a few more years.

That build has an AMD RX 6750 XT, which price the performance is way better than anything Nvidia has, unless you really want Raytracing. But it's your build, so if you want to go Nvidia, you can if you want to.
