Hello!

Built this PC 4-5 years ago and never really had a problem. Some crashes recently during taxing games but assumed that was GPU-load related.

Last night mid-game my system turns off completely - as if the power went off. I try to turn it back on via the front button and nothing - no fan whirls, no beeps.

Same thing with the on-mobo startup button - nothing. The startup button LED on the motherboard and one other LED are on when the powers on. The led error-code readout on the mobo does not turn on

Bought a PSU during lunch today thinking that was the problem. With the new cpu, one of the two cpu cooler fans slowly starts up but quickly dissipates. That’s the only difference though, no other signs of operation - still only the two LEDs on the mobo, no beeps.

Am I looking at a mobo failure? Haven’t done any breadboxing. Just finished hooking up that new PSU to no avail.

Thanks for the help!

Specs:

Mobo: Asus Maximus VII ranger
CPU: core i5 6600k
CPU cooler: cyrorig R1
GPU: 980 ti
Samsung 850 pro SSD
PSU: EVGA 850 G2

So safe to say my 980ti is cooked?
Don't know if it's "cooked' or that maybe if you clean it properly it might boot again. For that you need to take it apart. the next guy is pretty over the top when he cleans parts, but soemtimes old stuff that doesn't work before works after he gives it one of his thorough cleanings,

don't forget to get fresh paste for the gpu if you are going to try this. For the cooler block can you see how far you can get with a paintbrush and a vacuum cleaner.

I thought I'd at least get the PC to boot if it was a GPU problem - can anyone explain why it did that? I don't know that much about this...

That's what I did after posting the message and sure enough that worked. Put in the GPU from the living room computer and it's running fine.

  1. Booted with no GPU
  2. Booted with new (but actually old) GPU and it was good
  3. Booted with new GPU in different PCI slots
  4. Booted with new GPU connected but using onboard video.

If the power cicuit is what is giving the problem with the gtx 980 ti can it be that a safety measure in the psu is triggered and the pc just won't start.
