I've brought the EVGA gtx 770 to replace my old gtx 550ti. however my pc does not boot when the 770 is installed, instead all i get is a HP start up screen which then it freezes on. after a matter of seconds it beeps, and again 30 seconds later, after the fourth beeb, it beeps quickly and the screen goes blank. it is not a power issue as my PSU is 750w with 62 amps. more than enough to power it. i plugged my 550ti back in and it works perfectly... is there any idea why this could be?

Did you check the PCI-E power cable from PSU? Are they correctly hooked up with 770? You may want to contact EVGA to go through their own troubleshooting. If the card is a DOA, you need to go through it anyway. If it is really defective, it's better to return the card to the retailer for refund or replacement, rather than sending it for warranty. Of course if the retailer return policy still is effective. I once returned a Gigabyte 460 to Micorcenter, even after I submitted the rebate form, which means UPC code was already cut from the box. Microcenter gave me refund without the rebate amount.

That's not true.

i've already tried it on a friends pc and it works perfectly so i know it's defiantly not the card that is not working. do you think it could the the mobo, if locks and restraints are applied as it's a OEM built pc? all power cables are applied properly with a 8 and 6 pin.

Hi,
sounds like the same problem i had where despite the Mobo (Tpower i45 ) saying it was PCI-e V2.0 it is not compatible with the GTS450 (PCI-e V2.0) video card.
The mobo works fine with V1.0 PCI-e cards I tried but not one version V2.0, despite upgrading the bios to the latest available.
Suggest you ask your pals for a set of cards to try & pick the best that actually works.

I'm scratching my head. Things don't add up. Here are a few stretch scenario, though. I used such wild imagination a few times for various mysterious problem before, and sometimes they hit the point, although I couldn't believe them myself.

Fact
- 770 is proven to work in other PC -> A good working video card
- PCI-E 16 slot is working properly with 550 ti and 560 ti -> No motherboard defect

Speculation
- PCI-E power failure. 550ti and 560 ti don't require 6+8 pin, so they don't necessarily prove PCI-E power is fine
- 770's bigger size make the installation awkward, and the board connector is not secured into the PCI-E slot

The PC's PCI-E should be v 2.0, and 770 is perfectly compatible with 2.0.

I've made sure the 770 is screwed down and secure and there is no possible movement or obstruction to affect the PCI-E slot, i've also purchased the 750w psu today and the same situation occurred with the stock psu which was 600w so it is not a PCI-E failure

nope, nothing responds... it's the same screen of the HP welcome and that's it.. it offers esc for BIOS, but there is no response from anything... it's doing my head in!

The same motherboard - Chicago from Pegatron - showed the same issue. You better replace the motherboard. ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, they are all good brands. Find the best priced mATX H67. H67 boards don't have many variance, and you don't need flashy stuffs with non-K CPU. Just get the best price one. If you want to have an option to SLI, get ATX board, or mATX with two PCI-E 16.

Hi,
yeh that is what the specs say BUT the two fail to work together . I too tried a bios reset nadda just a black screen non-fuctioning keyboard or mouse no beeps from bios and the on board post LED's on my mobo says 9a<?> if memory serves just like the O.P I had to use another card that did work.

Had this problem with my ASUS GTX 770 This is how we solved it: Put the Video card in your friends computer, download the latest Video Card BIOS and update your card. After I did that it booted in my system the first time.

Hi,
BTDT but still no joy UNTIL I replaced the 2 core CPU with a 4 core CPU then it all works . Seems the I45 mobo only support V1.0 PCI-e with a 2 core CPU

BUT 4 core CPU makes V2.0 PCI-e work
