PC not displaying on second monitor

Recently got round to buying a DVI-D to VGA cable for my vga monitor and it doesnt seem to be working. I have a HDMI 1080p monitor already in that works fine. I have tried updating my drivers and it didnt help. The second monitor is not detected anywhere within windows, yet when I boot up my computer the HDMI monitor turns black when the second is plugged in so the port is working correctly. Any ideas?

You need an active adapter, just cable will not be enough.
