I built a i7 machine for a friend who lives 40km away from my place.

I've tested it out, played lots of games ...etc for 4 days and had no problems with it.

so i sent it there but my friend has many problems such as random lockups, and startup troubles (verifying dmi pool data > an error occured please press ctrl alt del to restart)

so he brought it back to my place and everything was fine again. what can be the problem?
maybe harddrive? windows 7?

ps. can't really think of anything different other than power but he's using a surge protector as well...

Did you try it without the surge protector while you were at his place? And is that surge protector on a UPS?

i would guess there are only two things that could have happened, something shook loose in the transport there and shook itself back into place on the transport back. Or there is an issue with the clarity of the incoming power at his place, if its on a UPS many PSUs dont like the square wave that cheaper UPSs produce and it cause issues with lesser PSU's. What are the full specs for the system?

no UPS
tried different power surge protector but not just the socket

its not like its completely dead or anything (works half the time)

yeah, i thought about power noise too. but all the other electronics there seem to be working fine...

specs:
i7 920
gigabyte EX58-UD3R mobo
BFG GeForce GTX 260 OC MAXCORE 55
hitachi 1TB harddrive
A-DATA XPG G-Series Triple Channel 3GBKit
OCZ StealthXStream 500W power supply

The computer "not working" for your friend could be the result of a number of causes.

Sounds like the best solution is to make a road trip to your friends and hook up the computer yourself and see what happens.

Issues like are too vague and difficult to troubleshoot and/or correct on an forum like this.

Make sure he supplies at least pizza and beer for your troubles!

Exactly

In cases like this theres a high chance of PEBKAC
