intel 17-477k CPU @3.50ghz
8 gb ram
Geforce GTX 760 2GB
PC is 2.5 years old

Initially I was able to run games like farcry 4. fallout 4 etc. for hours.
Now those games give poor fps and lag. Completely unplayable, and PC OVERHEATS.

If tried low requirment games like farcry 3, fallout new vegas, skyrim (with many mods), the games run well but not for more than 30-35 mins and pc overheats and shuts down.

Cabinet Fan, processor fan and gpu fan are working.
No dust in fans or heatsink.
thermal paste is replaced recently (coolermaster V1)
Processor temp checked by "openhardwaremonitor-v0.7.1-beta" shows temps above 99 celcius
PC abruptly shuts down while mid-game.

Solution
30Ghz is just initiation error marked as max, not a current value ;) so there is no point in not trusting it.
Anyway his software "openhardwaremonitor" show's the same temperature, there is clearly a cooler problem. Or something is wrong with cpu/mobo but not sure.

I know you said that the CPU heatsink is clean and installed correctly but TBH it doesn't sound like you fitted it correctly. That CPU should be nowhere near that temp. And I agree with Endless8, try HWmonitor or NZXT CAM Software as it has a overlay.

After the problem started, in effore to rectify it, i changed the paste.

Thanks for finding time and taking interest to help.

I have put the heatsink right, no doubt. Hv checked it time and again.

If the cooler is mounted correctly and HWmonitor is still reading high temps then did you apply the correct amount of thermal paste? You should be using no more then a grain of rice and I use a old store card to spread it evenly across the CPU before applying the cooler and it should be almost as thin as paper as too much will result in poor contact and will cause high temps.

the amount/layer of paste is right according to my judgement. Remember, GPU temp is also spiking, not just processor.

I doubt it's from age. It seems more like the stock fan could be dying or else the push pins have become loose and it's not making a solid connection. Even poor airflow in or around the case shouldn't cause it to hit 99c unless it's in an enclosed cabinet or something.

Nor surprises mate , your CPU is hitting 30ghz on that screen grab above!!
You have the fastest Intel CPU ever recorded !!

;-)

Jokes aside , you plainly can't trust those temp readings or clock readings.

Try hwinfo instead, I personally totally distrust hwmonitor.

Thats what I am going to try next... changing the stock fan... thats the only thing I haven't tried yet.

If you want something cheap, look for CM Hyper 212 or BQ Pure Rock.
